I just noticed this today, and I was going to poke around tonight when I get home, but I thought I'd ask for any insight y'all may have that may save me an hour in the driveway in the dark taking door panels off and on:


Cliff's notes:
2001 Tahoe
years pass
replace one and then the other 6"(4", whatever it is) front door speaker, Chevy parts.
years pass
CD player breaks, put in aftermarket JVC radio (from Crutchfield w/ their wiring harness adapter)
works fine
years pass
...
I notice that neither front door speaker is working. The tweeters right next to them are tweeting, but the main speakers don't do anything at all.

I was going to check the connection with a multimeter to see if there's power going to the speaker from the radio, but after that I don't have any plans, other than buy a new speaker to see if that fixes it, and I'd rather know what the problem is before I pay to fix it, y'know? I'm unsure of how to test the speaker to see if it works.

how did you wire them? did you just twist the copper around the speaker connection or actually connect it? the

Crutchfield sent a wire harness with the radio I bought, and it plugs into the back of the new radio and into the plug that plugged into the old radio.

The speakers were from a chevy dealer (b/c there's a frame the speaker fits in that clips into the door frame, it doesn't just screw into a round hole in the door).

So everything is connected using the original connectors, I haven't re-wired anything.

a chevy? connections probably randomly rotted out over the years

remove JVC radio
unplug wiring harness
get ohmmeter
measure resistance between front channels' + and - on harness
~4-6 ohms figuring wire resistance, good
no continuity, bad

^at harness - open circuit.

so I took the speaker out and tested the resistance right at the speaker, open circuit. New ones are on the way. Thanks for the tip.

are you going back with stock speakers or upgrading?

You could call it an upgrade, since the stock speakers are/were awful and way overpriced. I didn't spend a lot on the replacements. Coupla Sonys off of Crutchfield.

k, i was just going to suggest that you check the specifications for the stock speakers against what your head unit is putting out. a head unit without an external amp shouldn't be too much for speakers, but it might if the stock speakers were crappy enough.
