As we know we have seen the statewide Voter ID bill pass (aka the voter suppression bill) and become law. Now it appears there is a coordinated effort to bring it to the county level as well. County BOE's were received newly appointed members by the GOP run state government. That comes up in this Rachel Maddow clip:
http://video.msnbc.msn.com/rachel-maddow/52769481#52769481
By now we have all seen what has occurred in Watauga County and with Montravias King down in Pasquotank County.
Well it is now coming to light that the Civitas Institute may be heavily involved (Pope's conservative think tank) also. Their "elections analyst" Susan Myrick was present at King's residency hearing, and her name is reported to be on the Watauga County Board of Elections phone logs shortly before their recent decision to move voting off of ASU's campus and to squeeze 3 precincts into one voting site.
Something isn't passing the sniff test here. 8/23/2013 5:50:22 PM |

You lost your credibility when you mentioned Rachel Maddow. He's just as bad as Rush.
I have yet to see a compelling argument that proves voter ID laws actually disenfranchise people. 8/23/2013 5:53:16 PM |

Fact: Squeezing 9300 votes into one site, with limited access and 35 parking spaces saves 0 money.
Fact: NC regulations suggest precincts have a capacity of 1500.
Someone on the right please tell me how the move here at ASU is anything other than blatant student voting suppression. 8/23/2013 7:33:36 PM |

Early voting started yesterday here in Charlotte for municipal elections and the local news has reported on at least 19 cases of documented voter suppression so far. And that's just in two days! Just think about how many more people are going to be suppressed against when Voter ID actually goes into effect. 8/23/2013 10:23:47 PM |

Premise: There are documented cases of newly appointed, Republican Boards of Election systematically making it more difficult for students to vote, a move that saves zero money.

Caricature? Sure, call me that. I'm a lot more moderate than a good many of the conservatives out there. And I didn't disagree with the entire OP, I just want someone to tell me how ID"s disenfranchise people. If you can make a caricature of the Republican party out of me for that question, then that is your right. But its pretty retarded. Maybe I'm just being trolled. 8/24/2013 5:33:11 PM |

this whole thing is such a great example of fake outrage on both sides.
#1. there aint that much voter fraud. this is essentially killing a fly with a hand grenade. #2 it aint that fucking hard to show ID where you vote. it makes a lot of logical sense. #3 it also aint that hard to vote in the precinct where you have residency and to actually take the time when you turn 18 to register, ahead of time, like the vast majority of us do. its called INITIATIVE.
spare me the bullshit from both sides. 8/29/2013 4:32:38 PM |

For what it's worth, it looks like there is an active effort by the NC NAACP to raise awareness about voter identification and get out the vote around upcoming elections. After the Moral Mondays rallies at the legislature, and some big regional ones in various areas around the state, there was a day of simultaneous gatherings all across the state in each congressional district yesterday. Here are a few pictures I saw online of a few of the rallies timed for the March on Washington 50th anniversary:

many trans men first thought of themselves, and tried to live, as lesbians before realizing they actually had male gender identities
but the great majority of self-described lesbians are not like this, they have female gender identities and are only attracted to other women8/29/2013 11:16:32 PM |

A meetup group for a "voter integrity boot camp." My question is: if somebody challenges your vote, what exactly happens? Does the ballot just become provisional. What recourse do you have? Pretty sure they would just get a "fuck off" from me.

We already know some County BOEs have done some questionable stuff. The state BOE has waffled on all of it. This is setting up voting to be a huge cluster fuck. I think today was the last day 16 and 17 year olds could pre-register to vote, since the new law put a ban on it. I believe McCrory was asked how that provision would improve voter confidence, and his response was basically that he didn't know that was a part of what he was signing. 8/30/2013 9:33:26 PM |

^^I know some Rethugs in Ohio have done just that, rifling through records of registered voters and second-guessing the decisions of county boards of electons; you should get a notice when your eligibility has been challenged, usually long before you'd actually get to vote absentee. 8/31/2013 10:02:02 AM |

^ There's your proof that state board of elections executive director Kim Strach is bought and paid for and COMPLICIT in this statewide effort. It is funny that the chairman of the State Board, Josh Howard, a Republican, said the following to all county board members at training a few weeks ago:
Quote : | ""The real theme of the conference needs to be 'let's not have any more of our meetings show up on YouTube,'" Howard told the crowd. "We've had some rough meetings over the transition period of the last few months. That's fine. That'll happen. That's part of change," he added, but "you are not partisan rivals. You're colleagues. And if you do your job right ... you might even become friends."" |
And now we have his boss, executive director Kim Strach undermining those goals. Who knows if he really meant it.9/21/2013 1:23:11 PM |
