pretty much his whole career, he is now in his 90's. The entire collection of "survivor cars" is about to be auctioned.

This guy was genius and an idiot at the same time. If you have money to park hundreds of cars that have nothing wrong with them at your various properties, you should have money to build a shelter for them!!!!
A bunch of the cars that have less than 20 miles on them and have never been titled were kept indoors until about 15 years ago when one of his "warehouses" had a roof fall in. He just had the cars moved outside and let them sit, that is fucking madness because those cars definitely had collector value by then and any wear on them would be .
There was also a guy looking after them that lived on the farm but once the guy died there was no one and people started stealing parts. 9/15/2013 11:34:27 AM |

it's pretty common to see classic cars with high collector value rotting away because the owner is simply clinging to them. a lot of times the owner just gets off on having folks stop by and make offers. some folks love to think they have something that someone else wants. this is just an extreme case. 9/15/2013 11:44:46 AM |

You are right I see it all the time. They just want to sit back and talk your damn ear off about what they have and no interest in getting rid of it 9/15/2013 3:13:01 PM |

Well the old man says he is not going to the auction. No word if that's because of his age/health or because he cant stand to see his collection of neglected cars auctioned to the highest bidder. 9/15/2013 10:13:04 PM |

It would be interesting to see a spreadsheet for what he bought the cars for at wholesale vs what they end up selling for, then adjusted for inflation.
He purchased all of his cars from Chevrolet with cash, he never used a line of credit to run his dealership. He ran with pretty much no overhead, he built the building for the dealership himself, and had no staff other than one mechanic and his wife. This guy was like Dave Ramseys kind of car dealer.
This was in the 90s just before the dealership closed. ] 9/16/2013 9:26:20 AM |

This guy had the hoarding disease. Had he been a true collector, he would have taken the time to make sure these cars were properly stored. He hid under the guise of this being an 'investment', when it was really a sickness. 9/16/2013 2:05:36 PM |

this is a pretty incredible story..too bad a lot of the cars rotted in a field..
I don't get the whole retirement plan using cars. If that was the case they should of sold the cars years ago when they weren't too old to use the $$$.\

Lets hope they make something after inflation age adjusted.

Perhaps he's already sold some for retirement money
Also if this dude built his house and business, and bought his inventory with cash, he was obviously good with his money and didn't need these cars for retirement money
But yeah, he shoulda stored them better 9/16/2013 9:02:11 PM |

I'm surprised they held it the same weekend as Barrett-Jackson/Las Vegas.
I know both auctions have completely different and separate target markets but I imagine my dad is having a hard time flipping back and forth between the two on tv. 9/28/2013 9:22:26 PM |
