Living in the den of the enemy aside, what is life like living in Chapel Hill as a young single professional.
Is there a lot to do there for the non-college crowd as far as night life, fitness activities (runs clubs/rec sports, etc), music scene?
After a phone interview I got asked if I wanted to come up for an in-person interview for a company in Mebane (about 20 min from Chapel Hill). If I took the position I figured I could live in CH since the commute from Raleigh would be far (currently living in Charlotte). 9/18/2013 2:25:05 PM |

there is nothing but college trim (both good and bad), and all the bars are filled with annoying frat dudes. Carrboro is slightly more bearable but is filled with hippies. My gf lived there for about a year and i dreaded going out there. If you were married it would be as bad, and if you are ok with raging with college kids then you will be ok, but otherwise it sucked. 9/18/2013 3:10:03 PM |

I like living in Carrboro. Big pluses are the free buses, lot of shit to do downtown, good schools for the kids, etc. There are a lot of college kids, but they thin out some when you get around Carrboro, though you can expect to see more hippies, as previously stated. Plenty of places to eat and a couple of good breweries here too. I have never had issues with fratty kids hanging at the bars, but I don't frequent the bars that often anyways. Biggest downside for me is the expense of houses. Nothing is cheap here. I am honestly considering moving to Hillsborough or maybe even Mebane when we buy something, as I can get so much more house in those areas versus what I would get in CH/Carrboro. 9/18/2013 3:33:39 PM |

I lived in Carrboro for a year and was really dreading it but I ended up really liking it. Good food and a nice little downtown area. Definitely high on the hippie scale and houses were expensive but it was a pretty cool place really. 9/18/2013 3:56:16 PM |

I thought there were more hipsters than hippies in Carrboro but I enjoyed living there for a year before relocating to Vermont. 9/18/2013 11:41:16 PM |

Is Carrboro more suburby? If so CH may be the way to go for me. 9/19/2013 3:28:57 PM |

Carrboro is very unsuburban. CH is full of "communities". Southern Village is the most obvious, but Meadowmont is another super planned mixed-use development. Carrboro downtown area especially is basically just a shitload of houses on top of each other. There are a few suburb type developments like Hogan Lake and Winmore, but that shit is barely in Carrboro anyways. 9/20/2013 3:29:56 PM |

Do you have kids? If so, enjoy the good schools. If no, then stay the hell away from Chapel Hill. The property taxes are sky high. Look at Pittsboro if you want something close with reasonable taxes. You can move into the 'Chatham County' part of Chapel Hill and also avoid the high taxes. 9/20/2013 4:03:25 PM |

Yes, this works well. However if he works in Mebane he has to drive around/through Carrboro and Chapel Hill to get home. This will add quite a bit of commute time, when he could get housing and land at similar prices just west of town. 9/20/2013 9:23:31 PM |
