"Store owner Rodney James Duve, 52, of Corpus Christi, Texas was arrested Saturday night after shooting and killing an unidentified 39-year-old man who attempted to leave his store without paying for a 12-pack of beer.

The man was shot multiple times outside Duve’s Quick Stop, and police say he was shot “at least once” in the head. He was taken to Spohn Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Duve was charged with murder after the shooting and is currently being held in Nueces County Jail on $35,000 bond."

Some of these comments are cray cray

Quote :
"I have no problem with this. Don't steal shit from store owners, bars and cashiers barely scraping by. It's a good warning to other thugs."

Quote :
"Well isn't he allowed to shoot and kill anyone who attempts to steal his goods? Or is that just in self defense? There seems to be nothing wrong here."

Quote :
"Its unfortunate the guy died, but its obvious that he wasn't some saint who went around contributing anything positive to society. I hope the shop owner's charges are reduced considerably, I firmly believe that we have a right to protect our property and ourselves."

Quote :
"This makes me wonder - we don't know for sure for sure if the store owner intended to kill the guy. Maybe he thought he was just going to disable him or something, like shooting him in the ankle. Which goes to show that a lot of people who own guns for self-protection are completely incapable of using them correctly. If this guy was well-trained, he probably could have at least avoided shooting the thief in the head.

Sooner or later there will be a mass-shooting situation where some "American hero" with a gun but little training is going to try to take down the criminal and end up hitting a bunch of bystanders and make everything 10 times more chaotic. Jesus Christ, the police do that all the time and they have tons of firearms training"

Also I think it's interesting what Gawker did with the mugshot.

They turned this:

into this:

Looks more frightening right?

He goes from looking like Artie Lang to a Ariel Castro kinda guy

This is why I don't own a gun because I have no problem with shooting someone in the legs trying to steal something from you. He shouldnt have killed the guy but I dont blame him for firing some shots.

So you shoot him in the leg, hit is femoral artery and he dies. Why not just shoot when, where, and how you are supposed to and skip this vengeance bullshit?

^this. well other than my dogs.

but that's no excuse for the robber. don't give a shit about him either.

i do find it interesting how some people are fine with using deadly force in defense of property. we have (rightfully in my mind) decided that human life is never more valuable than property, and so it is not acceptable to use deadly force in defense of property. it really is no different than saying the appropriate punishment for theft is the death penalty.

i think the absurdity of killing a thief or other criminal in mid act becomes obvious if you arrested the same guy for stealing beer and then said he deserved to be executed as a punishment. it's very les miserables.

Don't all stores carry some level of insurance that covers simple theft? Ridiculous to kill someone for stealing a 12-pack.

^^^^What if your survival depends on the property that is being stolen? Obviously that isn't the case here, but it is a rhetorical question worth debating.

Maybe you don't know what anybody is going to do when you steal from them. Maybe you should think about that before you steal shit. A healthy fear among criminals isn't entirely a bad thing.

This is why the world is fucked up.

Person A does something to make person B upset. Person B shoots person A.

Maybe people speeding really makes person B angry. Does he have a right to go murder them? It could affect his life in the form of an accident. So why not nip it in the bud?

We really are abunch of animals.

What a terrible analogy

This is more similar to someone going in your car and stealing $10 worth of change from your ashtray, and then you murder them

I am surprised he was charged, you have the right to defend your property with deadly force in Texas. While this case is a bit different, I am all for killing someone for robbing you, those people are absolute scum and the world would be better off without them.

i've never heard of it being legal to defend property with deadly force. there are castle doctrine laws that say you can kill anyone in your home, but that is legal under a different premise than the one here.

for a really fucked up case, see People v. Du, about a Korean store owner who shot a girl in the head over some orange juice and after conviction served no time.
