http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/01/freedompop-launches-free-wireless-service/

Im thinking I might be headed to Republic Wireless but now I'll have to wait and see how this pans out (unlimited data not necessary, I have a 4GB plan on Verizon and I rarely use 2GB). Glad I have till November to see what the field looks like then.

Right now they only have one phone (HTC Evo Design) but the plan itself is 10.99/month for unlimited talk, text, and 500mb data (lowww)

Btw I have had one of the FreedomPop 4G hotspots for months and it works flawlessly. Love to take it to coffeeshops where I know wireless is slow/spotty.

Wimax, no roaming and voip over Sprint's data network? meh. Ringplus is another option for those who already have a sprint phone and don't need unlimited talk/text. http://www.ringplus.net/home/plans

Does Sprint still not have LTE in this area?

First I've ever heard of this, but it's definitely interesting to me. Likely going to stick with Republic, but this could be an option.

It's rolling out now but Sprint's network is very far behind in pretty much every way.

It's available in raleigh and quite a few other places in NC but it's all moot since the Evo Design will only support 3G and Wimax (unless you also invest in one of their LTE hotspots).

I picked this up for the cell service; I was tired of not having a smartphone (been using a 10/month secondary line on a friend's Verizon plan with an old razr) and saw Freedompop is allowing BYOD. I picked up a cheap iphone 4 and activated through Freedompop for 20 dollars. I'm getting 500 free texts, 200 free voice minutes, and 1GB of free data (900MB usable). it's on Sprint 3g, but it works fine so far. coverage is good in metro areas and along interstates/major highways. so far I've only used it in and around Charleston, but the maps show it should work in most places I travel to. has anyone else been using this plan? it seems a lot better than Republic Wireless as long as you don't need unlimited.

update:

after using this for a month, I don't see why more people aren't. I got my parents a line as well to replace their old grandfathered Alltel plan (75 cents a day for free nights and weekends and unlimited mobile to mobile) since they hardly use it. most of NC has 4g but they don't use data, so I gave them my iPhone 4 and replaced mine with a cheap 4s (55 bucks, power button is "broken" but jailbreak and activator takes care of that). driving to NC and back I only lost coverage out in bumfuck SC (Bennettsville). Sprint 3g speed sucks balls (I usually get .7mbps) but, again, free. and, since my folks don't use the data, I can get an extra 100MB from their account every month, bumping me up to a full gig. since I use wifi a lot, I still haven't come close to using up all my data.

call quality is fine, and generally better when done over wifi instead of the sprint network. Talked to someone for 50 minutes this weekend, no drops and no significant "can you hear me now" moments. and for some reason, it looks like either using wifi or calling a freedompop "buddy" doesn't use minutes; I haven't figured out what triggers this yet. for the 19.99 activation and price of the phone, it's well worth it, even if they don't stay in business for another year,

also, new free device (USB modem this time)
