i don't have any good pictures of our curtains available right now, but we've put them on three windows so far and plan to do one more but that's it. I like them in moderation where certain rooms call for them but I am not a fan of having them all over the house in every window. We have blinds in every window in the house already so we're more "purposeful" about where we add curtains.

For example, put curtains in a guest bedroom that gets a lot of direct sun in the morning just as added protection against sun "bleed" through the blinds. We also put curtains up to replace vertical blinds at our sliding glass door.

Curtains, done properly, look classy. Curtains, done wrong, look outdated. Proceed with caution.

We have curtains on our living room and bedroom window as those windows contain A/C units, which don't play nicely with blinds. We also have them in the dining room as the lady thought it would look nice. I don't disagree. Unfortunately I also don't have a picture at the moment.

agree. Contrary to what a lot of people (especially guys) think, curtains can look very chic and modern and even masculine if that is what someone is going for. Don't be afraid to layer either with roller shades or blinds + curtains if needed/desired.

For some inspiration possibly: http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/category/category.do?catalog=room&category=RM_CST_WINDOW

I feel however my wife tells me to feel about curtains. That being said, "I" like floor-to-ceiling panel curtains and feel that the old tie-back droopy, flowy style is dated. In other words, I actually don't care. She makes 'em, I put 'em up where she tells me

But they always turn out looking really nice IMO.

Plantation shutters are where it's at. Expensive, but I'll never have to worry about curtains.

^^ floor to ceiling straight panels like that are what I prefer too if we use curtains.

^ We don't have plantation shutters (which I do like, especially on the right house) but we do have nice 2" painted wood blinds in every window and we still put curtains in just a couple rooms for various reasons. In some spaces, it just needed something extra color/texture-wise on that wall. I think out of like 20 windows we only have curtains on 3 of them.

I like plantation shutters but they don't look right in all styles. Also, if you're in a rental as I am, that's not going to work.

When I buy, if they work with the style of the house, that's what I'll do. But some of the windows might still get panels as well.

i love mine but unfortunately they are only one one side of the house. I need to add treatments to the dinning room and kitchen.

I hate hanging curtains. :>(

Well besides the fact that I'm not in Asia...I rent. Why don't you call my landlord and ask him to replace all the window units, and see how well that goes?

We have blinds on all of our windows. We have curtains on most of them as well. Every time we have put them up, the room has looked better, so I am all for them.

i don't know which part of asia you live in, but you know, it is billions of km big and has hundreds of billions of people. a large part of asia, very large in fact, has window ac units.

We have plantation shutters (cost about $11k) to do our whole house (3100 sq ft). I love not having to worry about "window treatments" now although my wife did hang curtains in our two daughters rooms.

Shopping for curtains and rods and shit drove me bananas in our first two homes. I always felt like I was paying way too much for something that is not all that special (it's just fabric right?).

If you need privacy though, I guess it is a must.

It is just fabric but fabric isn't cheap depending on what you are looking for. In fact, quite often when you buy curtains, you are getting sewn and finished panels for cheaper than you could even buy comparable unfinished fabric yourself at retail. We made curtains in 2 of the 3 windows and it wasn't expensive, but it also wasn't really hardly any money saved. We did it because we got exactly what we wanted (and making curtain panels is super easy if you don't need black-out or thermal lining). The 3rd window we have done, we got curtains from IKEA and we couldn't even get linen fabric unfinished in the color we wanted for as cheap as we got it ready-to-hang from them ($19.99).

As far as curtain rods and hardware, I have made our own so far. Instead of paying for the extension rods that always sag slightly in the middle, I have gone and gotten pipe or conduit and just got Home Depot to cut it to length for me before I left the store. I also made the brackets using conduit straps and L brackets. Each rod and all the hardware cost a few bucks total. Spray paint to whatever finish you need. Of course, it helps that we have a fairly minimalistic and modern taste so I didn't care about any decorative finials or anything. Still, they could probably be easily added as well.

If you're a single guy worrying about curtain you're probably gay. Curtains are a woman's thing.

While we're making assumptions about each other's relationship status, I'm gonna assume you're a gimp living in some fat dude's basement chained up to a pole.

at least he only said probably so it's only partially judgmental

Caring about curtains or house stuff certainly doesn't make you gay. I'm married but I make the majority of our decisions related to house stuff like this and actually enjoy it. Not everyone cares about or is interested in the same stuff. Big deal.

I used ceiling-mount siding tracks with traditional fabric panels for most of our curtains. for our sliding glass door, actually set them somewhere around 15" back from the window and I have plant racks in between the curtains and the glass.

I chose a sheer blue and green leaf pattern panel so we still get natural light, just with a bit more privacy.

I also draped dark red curtains (but not satin- sheer flocked red damask) around my projector screen, and it really has a movie theatre feel to it. but, since our basement movie room is a mishmash of stuff from old apartments, i'm not sure if this concept will survive the next iteration of design. which needs to come soon, since everything's gotten pretty worn.

I made my own. Navy for the bedroom, white for the rest of the house. I like the simple panel look- no flouncy curtains here.

New house, I have to figure out wall paint colors first, then make curtains to match. I want to do maybe tan for the front room because of the dogs- white + dog =/ fun.
