Does it exist? Currently, to record classical guitar, I have a direct line from my guitar input straight to USB for computer recording. What I'm trying to find out is if there is better. Also, has anyone tried the new Garageband? It's... kind of sub-par... or am I just not really giving it a chance. Suggestions?

There are a lot of things that are better called "audio interfaces" these convert your analog guitar signal into a digital signal for your computer. There are also a lot of different options for your "DAW" or recording software. Search both of these terms and you should find a lot of information.

I only really need to plug in my guitar to my computer... But the quality could be better. Using the cord I usually have works ok but wanted to know if there was something better. So right now, a price range for an amateur who does this as a hobby with one input for guitar that will help me record with GarageBand or QuickTime will help me out.

A Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is probably pretty good. Gives you two inputs, probably only need one. Logic is kind of the next step up from garageband, but it's $200.

I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 but the 2i2 will work just fine for you. Excellent audio quality. Can be had on ebay for $100 bucks used or $150 new in stores. Also most of these audio interfaces are USB 2.0, but they work just fine.

If you have an iPad and your Mac is a Desktop, you can also get Focusrite iTrack Solo. It has USB 2.0 and a 30-pin interface and works with Garage Band for both OSX and iOS.

Thanks for being patient with me. If you haven't noticed, I am an amateur at this...

So in what cases would you want to go 4 out as opposed to 2 out. I was looking at the differences between 2i2 and 2i4, but wanted to hear from the experienced folks that are a bit more tangible than other folks on the internet.

I don't know what the advantage is with two inputs, but I use my outs as sends to external effects and stuff.

Is there a cable that you would recommend to go along with this? Or just an XLR to 1/4 inch guitar cord should do it to record guitar?

I'd recommend a small mixer.

I have an old USB Alesis (http://i.imgur.com/S1avyY3.jpg) that works great. I can either plug an electric in directly, or use the mics on my amp.

I can either send it to my computer, or send stuff from my computer to it, and listen to headphones. This is pretty great for playing along with music.

You can use a standard guitar cable. The jack on the Focusrite takes 1/4 or XLR. Just make sure it is switched to "Inst."
