I'm all for equal rights for gay people, but I still disapprove of the term "homophobic." It's perfectly possible to hate gay people without fearing them (even secretly).

I'd rather people say, like, "misohome" or "gayist"

On the other hand, I am, legitimately, a gynophobe (though I'm not at all a misogynist). I love women, but they scare the hell out of me.

I still take issue with the term "homophobia," though. Because even if the suffix "phobia" is sometimes used to denote outright antipathy, it still connotes (if not precisely denoting) fear. So the implication is that homophobes are really afraid of gays, because they're insecure with their own sexuality. And that's simply not true in a lot of cases.

Probably the main reason we say "homophobe" is that there's no natural "ist" to apply to gay-haters. Still, I don't much care for the term.

man, ever since i've "come out" as a "conservative" (registered libertarian actually but whatever), i've been called a redneck and a homophobe and a racist so much online

if i'd just kept my political affiliation to myself, they would have bet money I was the more socially acceptable liberal type, considering my laid back attitude on most anything people are into, and my group of friends so diverse it includes martians AND indigenous peoples from EVERY CONTINENT
