The downfall of the first one was how closely it mirrored the book, thereby completely missing the point of making a movie.

I've read that this one follows the book even more closely. This does not bode well.

^^ everyone who saw the movie read the book

The movie presents the story to a broader audience and brings the stills to life as live action for those who have read it. How does that miss the point of making a movie? Not to mention $$$$$ is a pretty good reason to make the movie too.

fo sho, i thought the first one was awesome and had no clue (besides of course the style) that it was a graphic novel.

There were only two "downfalls" I can think of regarding the first one.

1. It followed the books almost word-for-word. I thought that made the movie more awesome because it gave it that over-dramatized comic exposition feel. I have movie snob friends, though, who felt that the dialog was just the worst thing ever. They hated it because it didn't feel "real". I informed them that they were watching the wrong movie.

2. The scene directed by Quentin Tarantino was really, really badly done and didn't mesh with the rest of the movie. I'll give critics that.

I didnt think there was any downfall to the movie. I loved it. I have it on DVD. watched it on IFC the other night. but I know what time it is. I always though Jessica alba was weird casting but other than that, on top.

^^ I'd disagree completely. The Tarantino scene is the only one that bothers to properly make use of film as a medium.

Making the movie shot-for-shot with the panels of the book is great in theory, but Miller pushed Rodriguez to take it too literally. The book is imbued with a sense of tension and motion through techniques that aren't required in film; by ignoring film's advantages in these areas and using the book presentations on screen, the film feels stilted instead of alive.

I thought that was the point. to make the film look like an actual comic book

It can look like a comic book without ceasing to function as a film.

Never heard anyone complain about a movie following it's source material too closely before. Damned if you do, damned if you don't I guess. I really like the first one, I'll give this one a shot

First Sin City was OK. This was will likely be OK too. As long as it isn't bad like "The Spirit" was. I could not make it through that whole movie

I haven't read the book myself, but I heard quite the opposite.

I'm Krallum and I approved this message.

I saw it in theaters, and heard bad reviews, but was bored.

I enjoyed it quite a bit, knowing nothing about the story line, and having watched the first one back when it came out.

I only go to movies for mindless entertainment, and it met that aspect perfectly.

Agreed it doesn't fit the rest of the movie, but I still thought it was VERY well done.

I heard there were a few original parts to the story web that were extensions of the novels but not from the novels.

that was prolly one of my favorite scenes in the movie. Obviously Tarantino with all of the mindless dialogue.
