I found an episode centered on Tom to be an odd choice for a season opener. One that comes after an extended hiatus, no less.

Exactly. Tom's never been the funniest, and the whole thing with his wife chasing after other black guys is old at this point. He had so little interaction with the Freemans, and Riley and Granddad are two of the most ridiculous characters.
