The only reason any of us has ever heard of Collective Soul, or that they achieved any degree of commercial success whatsoever, is that riff: duh-duh-duh-DEH-DEH-duh-DEH-DEH-duh-DEH-DEH-DEH. The rest of the song is bland and unmemorable. And I don't much care for the singer, either.

I'm going to get flamed for this, but BTBAM's More of Myself to Kill. I skip through the beginning, listen to the melodic part that follows for about 2-2.5 minutes, then seek to the next track. The rest of the song doesn't really do it for me.

I mean, if not for this riff, "Shine" would never have become a hit, and Collective Soul would never have broken into the mainstream. None of their other singles is anywhere near as good as "Shine," and probably none of them is good enough to have made them famous on its own.

but I maintain that the riff from "Shine" is far and away the best piece of music I've ever heard from Collective Soul. and that the 3-4 other songs I've heard by them (I guess "The World I Know," "Precious Declaration," "Where the River Flows," and "December") are, without exception, meh or worse.
