Is there any pro/con to storing stone/lumber in piles vs a barn?

just the distance that they have to travel.

I was typically putting a market in the middle of everything with a barn nearby since they will store most foodstuffs and crafted products in the barn, while raw materials get stored in piles.

since they're easy to erase always build a pile where you tell them to clear an area out. they won't walk as far and when building they have everything there
