I'd like to hear of any experiences you have convincing a relative he should do some end of life planning. Acknowledging that you won't be here forever and planning accordingly is not morbid or weird.
Also interested in anything you may have done for yourself and immediate family (spouse, kids). 8/6/2014 2:36:19 PM |

just had a will done for my wife and I.
When I asked the lawyer if I needed a will, he asked "Did you know that your wife gets the first $100,000 in assets and the rest is split with your parents?". You could demonstrate the disadvantages of not having a will in order to convince your uncle. If you don't have a will, the state appoints someone to handle your estate (whether he/she is the best choice or not).
He also convinced me that it would make things easier for my wife, parents, siblings, in-laws etc when I do pass away. It was pretty convincing to me that it would put a bigger burden on my loved ones when creating a will took less than 2 hours my time (1 hour for consultation, 1 hour to review the documents and sign). 8/6/2014 4:14:30 PM |

^ Thanks, I'll look at that later.
^^ End Of Life Planning For Other People
^^^ We have wills for both of us, covering the different combinations of us dying and who will take care of our kid (and how). There's some more stuff I want to do, but I feel good about where we're at.
I probably should have titled the thread "Dealing with pain in the fucking ass relatives". There aren't any real assets that I'm aware of (with the money we've given them, there better not be); I'm just interested in him spending a little time to make clear what it is he wants and make things easier for everyone else. Both of those would be firsts so I'm not terribly optimistic :\ 8/7/2014 12:51:03 AM |

My wife and I bought life insurance.
It was about as pleasant as being stuck with a needle and piss tested (it really involved that).
Sucks these are things you can ignore completely when young, but once you have a mortgage and a bunch of other responsibilities you have to worry about your spouse and/or the kids. 11/26/2014 11:35:25 PM |

If they're a pain in the ass just ask them if they realize that they're being a selfish piece of shit and if they're okay with that 11/27/2014 12:39:28 AM |

I gave everything to the United Negro College Fund in my will.
I specifically said, I don't want a damn thing to go to a single family member. 11/28/2014 9:54:39 AM |

I have and want to, but never really made any moves toward figuring out how to make sure that happens. I'd like every bit of my body to be used somehow 11/30/2014 12:44:40 AM |

Does the relative have any dependents? Or other family members who will be responsible for health care decisions, financial decisions, funeral planning etc on his behalf if he is unable to make the decision himself? Sometimes when talking to people about this, I point out that making the decisions ahead of time will relieve family members of the stress of having to make the decisions in the middle of a crisis. Is he having health issues? If so it might help if a healthcare professional has the conversation with the person instead of family, if it's about healthcare decisions.
Also, MedCure is a great organization 11/30/2014 5:31:15 PM |

My 401k beneficiary is some random fucker at work

I need to look into the body donation thing. It'd be much better than my planned "burn me, do what you will with the ashes, and forget me"

I have life insurance. I never did before recently, but with a wife, kids, and a mortgage, it makes sense. 12/1/2014 8:22:08 AM |

I finally also purchased a life insurance policy.
20 year term, $4 million policy for $140/month which i got through my financial planner guy. When I was looking for financial planners, one of the questions I'd always ask is that I was interested in life insurance and wasn't sure if term or whole was right for me. This helped me weed out all of the shitheads who wanted to sell me whole life.
I told my wife it was only enough to cover our debts. She's an anesthesiologist. she could kill me and make it look like natural causes.
what are y'all getting for policies/rates? 12/5/2014 10:02:38 AM |

i only got a 500k policy but it's 20 something per month... 20 year term renewable if I want at the same rate at the end. 12/5/2014 10:09:16 AM |
