Looks like it could be interesting.

Although it features one of my biggest action movie/show pet peeves, the "turn someone's head slightly and now he's dead" move.

Has anyone gotten all the way through this yet? I've watched the first 3 episodes and so far I'd say it's just ok.

Just watched the first episode. While I LOVE the artistic visuals (set and costume design), and I really enjoyed the training scenes, I just don't think I can continue. The story line is choppy and the dialogue is cliché and kind of boring. Anytime anything interesting is being said, it happens so fast that I have to play it a few times to understand it.

Is it worth continuing?

3 more to go. Stayed up til like 3am again on a work night. I gotta stop doing this to myself but the show is addictive. I don't know why it's gotten such negative reviews.

I don't get the negative reviews either. The show isn't amazingly great but its not garbage either. I think Hundred Eyes alone elevates it to "pretty good" at least.

Only 2 episodes in so far, but I'm definitely enjoying it.

Do the story and writing rival Game of Thrones? No, but if they did you'd have people declaring it the second best thing on TV. Just because it doesn't hold a candle to a rival's story doesn't mean it should be discounted.

It's extremely well done, and some of the landscape shots are as good or better than anything else on television these days. Right off that scene comes to mind where Polo is riding the horse out during the sunset...incredible

Also, this is obvious, and I wonder if some of the same people worked on both projects...but it has a very similar feel to as as Mongol (and not just because they're both dealing with similar/same subject matter)

it's a pretty telling sign for the future of television that the expectations for this show was set so high because it was on Netflix

While I think it is just ok, it is far superior to any sludge that is currently on broadcast tv. CBS, ABC, NBC etc are really going to have to pick up the pace to keep up with cable and netflix. Even netflix's worst, Hemlock Bluff, is more watchable than a lot of the crap on broadcast.

I'm guessing you meant to say Hemlock Grove. And you'd be incorrect in your assertion that broadcast TV has nothing better than what Netflix has to offer. Hannibal on NBC is top shelf material, and there's a long list of TV critics that back up that statement.

Or, you know, maybe its because its the 3rd most expensive show (per episode) ever made beaten only by ER and the final season of Friends. Add on the fact that its paying for these numbers in its debut season and not after 5-10 years of established viewership, and yes, I would expect a large amount of hype.

Finished it last night. I think the negative reviews may come from the last few episodes, they kind of lacked quality. Final episode was good.

I have to admit it was difficult for me to keep the characters separate, especially the women.

I just finished listening to the Wrath of the Khans podcast series by Dan Carlin, and am intrigued by Marco Polo since it's set in the Kublai Khan era of the Mongol Empire.

How much am I going to hate it for historical inaccuracy?

How accurate do you assume that old of "history" to be in the first place?

How barbaric do you assume humans to be ~800 years ago? This isn't prehistoric shit where we can only fathom guesses from fossil records.

Given the volume of written accounts of events, there are sufficient accounts from different people which corroborate each other such that the big picture events have mass consensus over historians.

There are other facts, which are widely disputed... such as the estimated range of how many people the Mongols killed. Estimates vary from 30 million to 70 million people. But, even if it's the lowest estimate, the takeaway is the same.

That said, obviously, i would expect a lot of artistic license to be taken with visual imagery, set and costume design, how people might have looked-- you gotta film it in a visually appealing way. The story has to be compelling, so I expect that the plotline will be mostly fabricated.

What tends to annoy me with historically based dramas is when contextual historical facts are changed that have no bearing on the plot-- which is always due to hollywood writers who are too lazy to read a fuckin' book.

Considering there is a huge debate regarding the actual existence of Marco Polo, you shouldn't be too upset over it...

since the only record of his story is the book he supposedly wrote (which has been embellished and added to over the years) nearly the entire thing is fabricated

[Edited on January 8, 2015 at 2:03 PM. Reason : it's mostly about him...not the mongols]

Also he allegedly wrote it decades later.

I just think that you just have to take TV shows like this one as fiction set in a historical setting. The points you want to talk about should be tested against a biography or documentary.

I for one, was upset regarding how they portrayed Josh Speed's role in Abe Lincolns like in the movie "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter." They certainly did not nail the accuracy of Speed's influence on Abe.
