Might as well get this started for the cool down at the end of next week. Looks like we might be in for a long winter with a weak El Nino & lots of snow coverage in the Arctic. 11/7/2014 2:34:05 PM |

Well, a good portion of it has been brought on by the tropical cyclones in the East Pacific lifting off to the north (for example, the current low pressure system bombing out in the Bering Sea), which I guess could be an argument FOR global warming---but let's try to stay on topic. 11/7/2014 3:07:43 PM |

As far as that map they are using the word Bombogenesis in reference to the Alaskan storm (defined as when a non tropical low deepens by 24 mb or more within 24 hours). That is a stretch to say the least to use it with that graphic. I get that the storm will shape the pattern to allow the arctic air to push south but the public isn't going to grasp most or any of that. 11/9/2014 10:15:39 AM |

Eh, you might see a little snow/sleet, but likely nothing significantly measureable (depends on where you are going)---latest model runs aren't showing a whole lot of moisture available for that area this weekend despite CAD setting up. Monday may be a bit more favorable there with more moisture available, IF the combination of the surface low to the north & strengthening low off the coast can pull enough cold air down.
As for us in NC, the low pressure system on that shows up in the Northern Plains on Monday really blows up (between 960-970mb) over the Great Lakes region as it moves eastward Tuesday, and it could possibly generate some severe weather in eastern NC late Tuesday into early Christmas Eve morning along a fast moving frontal boundary. After that, we'll likely see some pretty good gusty NW to W winds later that morning through Christmas behind the front---with the only likely frozen p-type occuring in the higher elevations/western NC. Good thing for winter weather lovers is that this appears to usher in a quite dynamic pattern after that, with several shots of cold air coming down from Canada through New Years. 12/18/2014 9:37:47 AM |

I'll be traveling up 77 through SW VA and WV on Saturday. Glad to hear that it isn't going to be that bad, but I do hope I see a little snow along the way. 12/18/2014 7:15:42 PM |

Maybe you will where you are going, or on the way back?
That Great Lakes low isn't looking as strong as it was yesterday (though we still may see some storms in eastern NC early Wed morning), so Christmas Day is probably going to be fairly normal for this time of year for NC (around 50F for high, low 30s for lows). After that, conditions stay fairly mild until later Saturday when another front passes through---perhaps triggering the pattern change I mentioned before. 12/19/2014 9:07:08 AM |
