itt we learn that knowing "a few" people of a certain subset qualifies one to make generalizations about the subset as a whole
i knew two people named "chad"...both ended up in jail...therefore, people named chad are, for the most part, bound for jail 11/12/2014 10:15:21 AM |

Hey guy, I think you're reading too much into this.

quag's right. just because you know a few cool muslims, does not mean that the vast majority of them are not pretty cool. But I do know an Italian guy who grew-up in a baptist church, but has been a practicing muslim for the last 15 years. He's pretty cool. But again, that doesn't mean that most muslims are cool. You shouldn't generalize like that. 11/12/2014 10:31:32 AM |

fwiw, though, every muslim i've met IRL has been pleasant
not so with every self-identified christian and atheist, but there's a much larger sample set i'm drawing from 11/12/2014 10:40:44 AM |

I really think you all are reading (and inferring) way too much into this.

OMG FUNNIEST SHIT EVER
You HAVE TO watch this video by a religious-looking Muslim man going on a rant cursing out extremists and terrorists left and right using very flowery language!

Well this really hits home...
Quote : | "More than twice as many members of violent Islamist organizations have engineering degrees as have degrees in Islamic studies. Nearly half of those terrorists who had degrees had degrees in engineering. Even if you make extremely generous assumptions, nine times as many terrorists were engineers as you would expect by chance. They find a similar pattern among Islamist terrorists who grew up in the West – fewer of these terrorists had college degrees, but even more of those who had degrees were engineers." |

There is a lot of fucked-upedness within the Islamic world, no doubt...but what we're seeing and hearing from half (or a third, or quarter or whatever) of our country right now is absolutely shameful and disgraceful. 12/6/2015 11:12:04 PM |

Yeah, but...immigrants don't nearly as often come to study in America so that they can get degrees in art history or communication or some shit. At a minimum, you'd have to control for how many of their [non-terrorist] societal peers who came to America to study got degrees in an engineering discipline. I would expect that it would likely be every bit of 9x less.
On a side note, the Arabs I interacted with in Iraq and Qatar were mostly very nice people (didn't really have a lot of interaction with Afghans when I was there, or Kuwaitis for the few days I stopped over there, although I assume Kuwaitis are relatively similar to their Iraqi and Qatari brethren). It really is a fascinating part of the world, too...I'd love to go visit again someday if the situation ever permits.
There are a few of them who are dicks; it's usually due to be hypersensitive with personal pride with respect to a foreigner in their country...and really, the instances I'm thinking of were in Qatar, where they're generally wealthy and can be kind of...entitled. Every person I dealt with personally, though, was great.
