Its been a fire sale of an offseason, but at least we've got one positive so far:
Quote :
"
@Ken_Rosenthal
Sources: Zobrist and Y. Escobar going to #Athletics, Jaso and Daniel Robertson going to #Rays.

Ben Zobrist will be paid $7.5mm this year, and is a free agent next year. Yunel Escobar is signed for 2 years, $13mm with a team option in 2017.

This is squarely a win-now move, and an absolute sign the team expects to compete for the AL West next year.

It is now possible for the A's to field all-RH and all-LH lineups, meaning great things for all you fans of platoons out there. It looks like Semien will be moved from the starting SS role to a super-utility role -- bad news for Eric Sogard and Andy Parrino."

Robertson was their #1 rated prospect. Not really sure the a's currently can win that West, so I don't really get it but it should make them better for now..

I'm beyond questioning the front office moves at this point since we starting buying up to win the WS last year. I can only speculate that since we had an improbably terrible 2nd half for some reason and then let the WS game squeak away from us, we're paying the price back to ownership for all that extra$ going all in... it seems to be a somewhat balanced approach given this trade with TB.

gotta just have faith that Billy is still able to make more out of less like he's been doing

soooo swap out that Derek Norris pic for Mark Canha (who?)

Quote :
"Mark Canha played in his first major league game on Wednesday and the A's first baseman had an impressive debut with two doubles and four RBI. After the game Canha fell back on the baseball classic Bull Durham to get through his first postgame interview. ?Canha is paraphrasing the rote answer that Kevin Costner's Crash Davis teaches to young pitcher Nuke LaLoosh to get through interviews.

I'm just happy to be here, and I hope I can help the ball club. I just wanna give it my best shot, and good Lord willing things will work out.

Canha would probably do well to stick by this interview strategy for the entirety of his major league career."

Definitely weird season, we only winin blowouts. I am thinking it will be back to a typical a's season after a week or two, great pitching and terrible offense.

Well Beane traded away our whole team in the offseason so who knows. So far starting pitching has been solid, offense has been decent, and our bullpen sucks balls.

this. we've lost so many 1run games so far this season - any won only a couple I can think of. That used to be the A's hallmark in recent 3-5 years: strong starting pitching, bullpen, and closer to squeak these game out...

Is it too early to call Beane's total rebuild a complete failure???

yes, of course it is. The only reason we got any cred going into this year is because no one picked us to be good the past 3 years when we either won the division or stumbled into the WC. We're now back to where we should be "on paper" given the players and salary we're fielding...

BUT - this year has seen more in terms of injuries (CoCo), player regression (Kaz) and lack of young player development (many here) than anyone could have pessimistically predicted. So still a bit too early. This team obviously isn't making the postseason this year - so it will be interesting to see if they pack it in, or rally and improve to make a late season run before things wind down.

Remember Houston last year? Terrible start in the first half, but they beat lots of good teams in the last couple months to impact the playoff picture. Now this year they kept that momentum and started off on a tear. We have to hope for that scenario if not another bernie leanin' miracle

I guess I am still pissed about the Donaldson trade. Most of the others I could see the reason but there was no excuse in my mind for dealing him.

I saw last night that Donaldson hit his 14th homer, thanks a lot Beane.

now that the NBA playoffs are over, and the A's seem to be figuring it out, I can actually enjoy watching baseball for the rest of the season

i support the Kaz trade. He was gone after this year anyways. Despite some glimmers of hope, theres no way we catch the Halos at this point. Plus we all knew this kind of season was coming after the Shark + Lester all-in moves last year...

Let the commence!

sbnation writer is spot on here:
http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2015/7/23/9025083/scott-kazmir-trade-astros-athletics-as

Quote :
"Which brings us to the A's. They're out of last place, which is a start, but no one should overlook just how deeply unfair this season has been for them. They've scored 412 runs this season and allowed 364. According to the Pythagorean Theorem, that should translate to a 53-43 record, which is exactly what the Astros have.

If you want to dig a little deeper than raw runs scored and allowed, FanGraphs has something for you called called BaseRuns, which tallies up the hits, walks, homers, et cetera that a team gets and gives up, and estimates how good they would be if they were all distributed evenly. The A's would be the third-best team in baseball, just behind the Astros.

These are all estimates, you grumble, of what should have happened. Fair enough. The A's wretched bullpen might mess with what we know about expected records. Maybe the managerial moves really have been that bad, I couldn't say. More likely, though, is that the A's have gotten a king followed by a six in every stupid blackjack hand they've played this year. It looks good! And then it's a six. It looks good! And then it's a six. There's no logic or reason behind it, and it will almost certainly go down as one of the more unfortunate and unlucky teams in recent baseball history, if not all baseball history.

You can point at the 2015 A's and scream, "This! This is baseball! This is why I hate it! Look at this team! Look at this awful sport! Please get this awful sport away from me!""

I blame errors and bullpen. And mostly trading away Josh Donaldson. The Kazmir trade sounds alright, but still pissed at Beane for the Donaldson trade.
