Quote : | "Variety is reporting that four of the country’s largest theater chains are refusing to show Beasts of No Nation, an independently produced movie for which Netflix purchased the streaming and theatrical release rights for $12 million last week. Netflix is reportedly planning "a strong Oscar push" for the film, which stars Idris Elba. The company plans to make the movie available for streaming, but in order to be eligible for an Oscar, it must also have some form of theatrical release.
The theaters, though, aren’t interested. AMC, Carmike, Cinemark, and Regal all informed Variety that they won’t be screening the movie because the chains do not wish to show any movies that don’t conform to the traditional 90-day delay between a movie’s theatrical presentation and its availability in homes via disc or streaming.
Instead, quoting "insiders," Variety indicates that the movie will see a much more limited release in a few hundred smaller theaters, including the Alamo Draft House. Draft House CEO Tim League is quoted as saying he doesn’t mind the idea of showing movies in cinemas even if they’re available to people at home via streaming. "I think that argument is a little bit of a red herring," he said.
The film's producer doesn’t appear worried about the limited theatrical release, either, pointing out that distribution via Netflix will allow the film to reach a much larger potential audience than a theatrical release. And Netflix will be doing more of this thing in the future as well—as both Variety and The Guardian mention, Netflix is ramping up its plans for streaming first-run theatrical films with several titles in work for release this year." |

Never knew about the theatrical release requirement to be eligible for an Oscar. Until now, direct to video movies were no where near Oscar caliber, but it'll be interesting to see if the Academy changes this policy somewhere down the road. 8/16/2015 9:10:41 PM |

Strong performances but the story lacked a bit of direction. They did make a great point about the mentality of child soldiers and giving a great exposition on the emotional toll and psychological effects of it but they completely left out the war and the other side of the story. Which is fair since the story mainly focused on one child soldier. The kid that played Agu knocked it out of the park though. I loved the on screen presence he has towards the end of the movie, it really hits home right about there. Idris Elba as usual gave a stellar performance as well. Sad film but overall I liked it. Be prepared for a slow burner though. Very heavy topic for Netflix to take on but overall I like the movie. Will be interesting to see how it will fair at the oscars, I believe the child deserves one but maybe the movie itself doesn't. 10/19/2015 1:25:13 PM |

I agree with the good performances but lacking story. I got bored with it in the 2nd half of the movie. 10/19/2015 1:35:44 PM |

The rule only requires that it run in Los Angeles for seven consecutive days before the end of the year, which is why you see all the Oscar bait stuff run limited in NY/LA in December. It won't make any difference to the rule.10/19/2015 3:30:10 PM |

Just saw this, and I thought this was pretty good. Very heavy subject matter, pretty depressing. The kid was great, supposedly they found him in Africa on a soccer field. 1/19/2016 12:15:12 PM |
