it's strange watching a trailer of Whitey Bulger intimidating someone to keep their mouth shut when Bulger served as an FBI informant most of his criminal career.

^^ Having read the Black Mass book, the investigative reports from the Boston Globe specifically point out that it was likely that Bulger was using the FBI and John Connelly much more than he was being used by the Government. By informing on rival groups and specifically the Italian Mafia in Boston and Providence, Bulger had free reign over the city. He and Rifelman Flemmi saw that providing the FBI with information they found beneficial to their own mob interests allowed them to flood the city of Boston with drugs and commit murder without fear of any prosecution. This was the exact argument that Bulger's defense team wanted to make during his Federal trial, but were denied by both the government and judge.

Growing up in Massachusetts, Bulger's reign in Southie is legendary. However, there is no way that he and his crew would have been able to get away with half of the things they were doing without the FBI playing interference on the DEA and Mass. State Police. It also didn't help that Bulger's brother Billy was the longest serving President of the Massachusetts Senate during this whole time.

Going to see this tomorrow. I've heard good things. Glad to see Depp play a non goofball for the first time since Donnie Brasco.

Movie was good, intense. Depp was extremely menacing.

Very solid movie. Especially loved the way it was shot and the soundtrack. Depp absolutely nailed the character and from start to finish a great story. Not perfect but overall great. Definitely recommend.
