What are some unwritten rules?
- (Baseball) If you show up the pitcher by galavanting around the bases after a homerun, or flip your bat flamboyantly, your teammate is going to get beaned - (Basketball) If you commit a hard/dirty foul on another player, you will get fouled hard/dirty by one of their players
There are all of these unwritten rules that are part of the game (cliche-fest) but what are some more? 6/27/2015 1:39:23 AM |

There are dozens for baseball. Here are a few more:
You don't steal bases when you are blowing out the other team. You don't bunt for a hit during the later innings of a no-hitter/perfect game. Pitchers should avoid eye contact with hitter after they strike the hitter out, especially young pitchers and veteran hitters. In a blowout, you don't take out the 2nd baseman/catcher, etc on slides. Basically you are not allowed to be aggressive if the game is over. Applies to all sports for the most part. 6/27/2015 6:29:40 AM |

nvm ^ beat me to mine.
i'm not sure if it's really an "unwritten rule" or if it's just sticking up for your teammates, but in football and hockey you don't take cheap shots on the QB or goalie - if you do you can expect to be roughed up afterwards. Less so in football since fighting is obviously not allowed, but the lineman and everybody always stick up for the QB.

In soccer, if the other team has an injured player, you kick the ball out of bounds to stop play. The other team, as a courtesy, throws the ball back in play to your defense/open area so that is given back to you. 6/27/2015 6:56:12 AM |

Cheap shots on the qb are a written rule and retalitory fouls are not part of the game in basketball and will get you fined and suspended if its against a star.

obviously there are rules in how you can and can't hit a QB. "cheat shot" is a pretty subjective term and you can expect a team's OL to stick up for their QB regardless of whether or not the perceived "cheap shot" drew a penalty or not.6/27/2015 9:12:08 AM |

Baseball: The dumbest sport
I used to love playing baseball as a kid, and even know I still enjoy it as a fan, but holy shit it has the stupidest ingrained culture. Virtually all the unwritten rules are about being "shown up" or based around actual physical harm being caused because of some perceived slight.
Worse still is the worship of the "human element" because preventing easily corrected errors and getting things right is less important than preserving an archaic tradition. 6/27/2015 10:36:00 AM |

college basketball: starting seniors on senior night / playing them if in a blowout situation.
college football: playing your scrubs after you've got a runaway.
football: no on sides kicks, 2 pt conversions, etc. when you have a runaway.

When most of the steroid crap was going on, there was not a written rule against it. As for betting, there has been a clear rule in place for nearly a century. Baseball is the only major sport that actually is doing jack shit about HGH and steroid use now. Also Pete Rose is a horrible human being, why people get all up in arms about him is baffling.6/27/2015 5:07:28 PM |

Anabolic steroids and HGH are illegal without a prescription. There doesn't need to be a rule against it. There probably isn't a rule against murdering the other team, either.6/27/2015 7:17:28 PM |

I agree that baseball should have responded sooner and more strictly with regard to the steroids era, but the players union played a role in dragging that out.
As for players, managers, anyone with significant influence on the game being allowed to gamble, that is just asinine. If you create even a modicum of gray area here, you open a Pandora's box for corruption throughout the sport. 6/27/2015 9:55:53 PM |

I don't know if it's written or not, but it probably is, if there are multiple classes racing at the same time, the slower cars should maintain their line so the obviously faster car can go by without worrying wtf you're going to do

soccer:
1) put the ball out of play if there's an injury, irrespective of what the ref says, and especially in rec league. then the team putting the ball back into play returns it to the team that had possession when the incident occurred.
2) you knock someone over unintentionally, you help them up. if they're a bitch about it, you are allowed to jaw at them the rest of the game.
3) Running up the score late in the game is poor form, unless the team you're playing is a bunch of assholes.
4) You don't do tricks when you're up by a significant margin unless you want your ass beat.

I dunno...I've seen teams do this pretty frequently. It helps your goal differential, after all.
My understanding has always been, in league play, it's pretty much always okay to score as many goals as you're capable of scoring. (In cup competitions, especially when you have first-tier teams against minnows, it's maybe a bit different.)6/28/2015 5:50:12 PM |

in hockey, I guess its an unwritten rule that when the puck is already gone, and you have time to be turning that way, you still ram the other guy into the wall

In Basketball.
If a player gets lightly fouled while driving and looses the ball out of bonds, the refs don't call a foul, but let the fouled player retain possession.
(This gets broken when the replay is implemented in the final minute of a game, and we have to watch a player get hacked in slow motion, but the foul isn't reviewable while possession is). 6/29/2015 9:56:55 AM |

B.S.... Thats implying a bunt is an above average way to get a hit/on base. if that were true, players would bunt all throughout the game yet they don't. Bunt away batters, whenever you want.6/29/2015 3:23:10 PM |

Baseball
-Don't talk to or go near a pitcher throwing a no-hitter -If your team has just hit back to back dingers you take at least the first pitch, and maybe you take until he throws a strike -You don't acknowledge to the media that you threw at someone on purpose 6/30/2015 9:57:09 AM |
