It was only one visit, but Seattle really really disappointed me when I visited earlier this year. Maybe I just didnt hit the right places (was in town for a conference and my schedule kept me near the hotel in downtown) but it seemed really really generic. I had to search really hard to find a place to eat that wasnt a chain that I could go to anywhere. Also could have been that I had visited Denver for the first time a few weeks before that and it blew my freaking mind, by far the best US city I have ever visited. 11/5/2015 12:44:28 AM |

If you were contained to only the area around your hotel then you missed out on a lot Seattle has to offer. I imagine that if you say "downtown" and "chain" then your hotel was probably near Pike Place. While I like Pike Place market, the area immediately around it is steered more towards general tourism. There is some fantastic restaurants and bars just a few blocks north (Belltown), south (Pioneer Square), and east (capital hill) of Pike Place.
BTW Jaybee...I'm sure you'll appreciate that I moved to Seattle in March from Knoxville. I absolutely LOVE Seattle but I'd being lying if I said I didn't miss Rocky Top. 11/5/2015 3:30:29 PM |

yeah, we were definitely just in that tight area but it still shocked me. Basically felt like an outdoor mall. I did find a couple of cool bars, one was something like Jake's 1000 Spirits or something and another was a cool wine bar called Purple I think.
I have mixed feelings about Knoxville. Its great 5-6 weekends a year during the fall, but aside from that, its just too small and too isolated for me. No way I could ever live there again, would definitely pick Seattle over it, but I can see how you miss parts of it. 11/5/2015 5:00:53 PM |

Yeah I'm still here, live in Bellevue but bought a house in Seattle proper.
Jaybee, when you come back I'll show you the real city next time. Downtown is very touristy and spotty. 4/10/2016 2:21:54 PM |
