What's the best way to connect. I just have a Roku Premier+ (hdmi, not audio ports), 5.1 soundbar w/ optical and 4KTV. What's the easiest way to run the sound and still get high-quality digital audio? Do I need some sort of converter/extractor/splitter. I don't know shit about this stuff.

Hopefully your TV will pass the 5.1 signal over the optical out and not downgrade it to 2.1 1/3/2017 9:09:56 PM |

^^That should work. What model TV do you have? It's probably not passing 5.1 signal over toslink but first confirm roku does 5.1 which it prob should? 1/4/2017 3:11:35 PM |

I use an HDMI to HMI/Toslink for my Sonos Playbar since it only has a fiber optic input and my TV's optical only output 2.0 1/5/2017 11:02:24 AM |

Went through this last year when converting to Roku.
Most TVs do not support stripping 5.1 from incoming HDMI for pass through to toslink. Something about a law.
On the plus side there is no such thing as a 5.1 sound bar. A 2.0 downmix should be perfectly fine for anyone who buys a soundbar. 1/7/2017 7:52:24 PM |

I assumed that he's not getting anything from his rears and if it's 2.0 downmix probably not his sub either. Whether the fronts and center are in the bar or not is irrelevant. It would still be noticeable. That said, the way you have it hooked up Restricted is still digital audio but if you want "5.1" the switch from monoprice that RawWulf linked is prob what I would do. 1/8/2017 9:32:24 AM |
