Netlix

starring NPH as Count Olaf. Anyone watching this? The plan is for 26 episodes covering all 13 books. I have no previous knowledge or connection to the books. Assumed it was a children's/tween series similar to Harry Potter. The show has taken me a bit to get into it but it's pretty unique and entertaining. NPH is funny as Olaf but highly annoying at times.

For some reason, I'm always slow to watch that first episode of any Netflix original, but once I do I'm sucked in. Only exception so far is Orphan Black. I tried, just couldn't get into it. I plan on watching this after I see the latest season of House of Cards.

It's got a weird Wes Anderson in a Tim Burton world vibe to it. We've enjoyed the first 4.

I'm through the first 6 so far. I love the atmosphere and the settings. Everything is well acted out and the characters are fun and lively. That being said, I don't know how much more of the "adults never believe the children" trope I can take. Mr. Poe is easily the most infuriatingly written character in the entire series.

That being said I enjoy Olaf as the villain greatly, and his henchmen are easily the most entertaining. The two old ladies and the monotone guy just have perfect delivery.

Captain Sham sounds just like Deckard Cain from Diablo.

Finished season one, loved it. Soooooo much better than the movie that came out years ago.

I think the only thing I like less about this version is Mr. Poe. Timothy Spall played him the way I always imagined him, very sweet but incredibly naive. The Netflix one seems less naive and more just plain dumb and selfish, and doesn't seem to actually care about the childrens' fate. However, I was excited to see the actor because I immideiately recognized him as Mr. Trick from Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

Already watched all of it. Production wise it's more of the same (which is a good thing). The 2 main kids are not good actors but everything else about this show is fantastic.

Anyone who has read the books knows the stories start to become morally ambiguous as time goes on, so the story becomes a lot more interesting and each book (or pair of episodes) is almost like a self-contained morality play.

There's a great recurring role that feels like Nathan Fillion was born to perform, and there's of course the continued line of awesome guest appearances, most notably this season by Roger Bart, David Alan Grier, and Tony Hale.

And as a personal note, I appreciate the amount of Jewish humor they added back in to the scripts. There were a few references during the first season but not nearly as much as he uses in the books, and they more than make up for it this time around.

I highly recommend this short read:

I was curious of the Jewish references. I guess the author is Jewish?

Yes, Daniel Handler. And he's gone on record that the Baudelaires are as well.
