There is a growing belief that satire enables the things it mocks, instead of the other way around.

Is there a line that shouldn't be crossed, or does limiting comedic expression limit the evolution of ideas?

The PewDiePie thing is what made me think about it, but it's inspired by a trend I've noticed. Did you think the "Death to all Jews" thing was innately anti-Semitic, or was it because people failed to understand the joke?

No, I don't think creating taboos is a good thing, at least when they can't be tied back to behavior that is actually harmful.

Part of the problem here is that certain groups have applied labels like "nazi" and "racist" so liberally that they're not useful labels. When you abuse language, you may be able to confuse people in the short-term, but in the long-term you're debasing the meaning of words. Maybe that's what you want to do if you're a postmodernist.

I think it's fine as long as the person making the commentary goes out of his/her way to mock and belittle the beliefs or actions.

I'm unfamiliar with the PewDiePie thing.

Ironic bigotry is basically what put Sasha Baron Cohen on the map. Ali G and Borat are obvious commentary on anti-semitism, and racism in the US. I think overall its good, but i understand the abuse of language argument.

Short of blatant privacy rights invasions or explicit calls for violence no speech should be curtailed. How an individual uses parody is up to the that person to decide.

On a side note, Milo is the CPAC keynote speaker. Which is sad for CPAC but I hope he is able to do it without any issues like the despicable show in Berkeley.

I'm a little glum that this is even a thread. Funny, silly stuff is always good, and even when it's misinterpreted, it still gets people talking...so that's good, too.

If some "growing" problem exists today, it's comfortable/loud ignorance, not satire.
