Does our vet school have programs for inexpensive treatments or surgeries for animals, since its a teaching school?

The vet school is anything but inexpensive.

Check north wake animal hospital...they used to be cheapest around. Not sure if that's still the case since they got bought.

i had a family member take their dog there for a terminal illness because they couldn't afford what the vet wanted to charge for euthanasia and disposing of the dog's body (i think the euthanasia was normal, but the disposal cost was really high). the vet school euthanized the dog i think so they could study the tumor and handled the disposal at no cost. i have no idea if this is common or how it works for treatment.

Yeah, the vet school isn't cheap. I think you have misconceptions about what the vet school does.

We had a splenectomy done on our beagle at the Animal Emergency Clinic of Cary. It still wasn't cheap, but I felt that they were reasonable, given what we were having done. I have a co-worker who has horror stories about the NCSU vet school, regarding expenses.

Since they are a teaching school, they get very specialized and treat things other vets wouldn't, which is where the expensive part comes in I think.

I'm finding this out the hard way unfortunately. I have had to take my dog to the dermatology department 5 times or so due to "Atopic Dermatitis". It aint cheap.

I took my dog there years back for allergies. First thing was a blood test to see what she's allergic to, but that came back inconclusive. They wanted to do skin test next but I was already $400-$500 in (single visit) at that point so I declined.

He's on a strict diet (ultamino). Also taking a pill everyday (atopica). They want to do the blood test and shots next time.

Does the atopica seem to be helping?

My dog has been on a small dose of prednisone (currently down to 2.5mg once every two days) for years, which they say isn't a clinically effective dose, but it 100% definitely helps.

I'm interested in trying atopica instead of the pred to reduce the load on her liver.

You could also try Apoquel. My dog has bad allergies and taking that every day has definitely made her constant itching better.

we started on apoquel then went to the atopica. it does seem to be helping.
