Depends on which side you are talking about.
The south was fighting for slavery, but the north was not fighting to end slavery. They were fighting to stop the south from leaving. 8/22/2017 8:31:44 PM |

States rights ftw!
Seriously though, I read somewhere that the south only truly recovered from the Civil War in the 1970's. Yea that was a long time ago, but given how the Civil War happened so many years prior to the 70's...that's pretty amazing.
And you know, people shouldn't be salty over the outcome of the Civil War. What they should be salty about was our country's government during the Reconstruction period. Lots of shitty people running things back then. They did establish the Freedmen's Bureau though, which set the groundwork for some of the HBC's around. 8/22/2017 9:21:39 PM |

Maybe if they hadn't enacted Jim Crow and fought against civil rights, they could have recovered much, much faster. 8/22/2017 10:26:43 PM |

Must have been super hard to recover from losing all that free labor. Glad to hear they surmounted that economic obstacle in the 70's, cause that's what's important.] 8/22/2017 11:53:23 PM |

it was about slavery. there's no debate or question about it. stop with the alternative history. 8/23/2017 7:51:39 AM |

You could argue they wouldn't have without the war for a long time as well. I know it's common Lost Cause ethos to claim they were moving away from the slavery-based agrarian society anyway but there I've yet to see convincing evidence of that. Especially considering all the states clearly delineated secession motives.8/23/2017 9:18:36 AM |

Look people, the title of the thread was to discuss the Civil War, and the OP went on to make a statement about how people still get riled up. I was just trying to provide points as to why.
I'm not arguing anything about cause. Or about who was right or wrong. I'm not posing alternative history.
The south was devastated as a result of the war. It lost a larger percentage of its population, it lost a larger percentage of what little manufacturing there was. Sherman's march devastated a very large swath of population centers. Reconstruction was also economically devastating.
I'm not making an argument that it was just as bad as slavery - it's stupid to think anyone would try to make that comparision. Yes, while the south suffered from the Civil War, slaves suffered for a much longer period of time, and their descendants are still suffering today.
Did I cover it all? 8/23/2017 10:03:44 AM |
