And I'm for banning those as well. It doesn't matter if the shooter used those or not, devices specifically designed to make a semiauto as fully automatic as possible should not be allowed 10/2/2017 12:20:02 PM |
eleusis All American 24527 Posts user info edit post |
why, because repetitive loud noises are scary? those devices make the guns harder to shoot accurately. I'd rather take my chances running away from someone with a hip fired gatling gun than from someone with a bolt action rifle and good aim. 10/2/2017 12:24:06 PM |

Probably most of the people doing or wanting to do this types of massacres aren't trained and don't have "good aim" 10/2/2017 12:30:56 PM |

You're likely right; the guy that opened fire on a group of congressmen a few months ago fired 50 times at distances less than 100 yards and managed one hit.
This event had thousands of people congregated so close together that aim wasn't necessary.

I don't know why you guys even bother with these circular arguments anymore. These folks have made it pretty clear that they'd rather watch their loved ones bleed out in the street than ever give up their adult binkies. You can't really reason with that level of fanaticism, no different than religious extremists, you just have to wait for them to die off. Which is happening anyway, gun ownership is at a 40 year low with fewer people hoarding them all, which will make them much easier to track down and confiscate once the required laws are passed. 10/2/2017 3:08:53 PM |

^ That's actually on point, but more importantly, no one who calls for complete banning of guns says that it will erase murder. Nothing, no laws, will reduce murder to zero.
However, gun laws CAN and DO significantly reduce murder rates, so that first part of the statement is bullshit.

To further point out the moronic state of this country - we constitutionally guarantee the right to own an unlimited number of guns but we do not guarantee the right to healthcare for the victims of gun violence. The flip side is banning toothpaste and sodas from secure areas is pointless and annoying, but who wants to be the guy that ends the dumb ban only to have someone exploit it?
Gun control isn’t really about mass shootings. We already have too many guns and there’s too many ways to do a mass shooting that without a total gun ban we aren’t going to see changes in mass shootings.
Gun control is really more about routine gun crime which makes it harder to argue that guns are the key factor over other factors. People need to talk about gun control in a holistic sense and I’m not sure ratcheting up after mass shootings is helpful— because only the most far reaching gun laws, that are currently unconstitutional, will put a real dent in mass shootings, and this is what causes the right to be the most defensive on the issue. 10/2/2017 5:10:36 PM |

I'm not concerned with gun death levels, as that also includes suicides. If a person wants to kill themselves, so be it. If you want to compare homicide rates to other places, then white Americans have a marginally higher gun homicide rate than Western Europe, despite having easier access to firearms than most of Europe.
Gun laws regarding bumpstocks and gatling triggers aren't going to do much to tackle the minority gang violence that accounts for a significant portion of our murder rate. DC has a murder rate of 24 per 100k even though guns are already illegal in the district. Baltimore is inching towards a murder rate of 55 per 100k, even though both open and concealed carry are practically illegal.10/2/2017 6:45:37 PM |

Absolutely. Unless you think the US drug problem is fueled by people taking bags through cousins and getting lucky. Are you suggesting there is an appreciable difference in the difficulty of smuggling different things for orginaizations large enough to affect the Us black market?

I'm suggesting that (1) yes, smuggling in a massive number of large, static objects is appreciably more difficult than smuggling in a plant, or a powder, or a liquid and (2) production of a highly complex instrument like an automatic weapon is appreciably more difficult than producing most narcotics
Also, and this is a completely innocent question because I don't actually know the answer, but is there a high number of guns in existence that were manufactured illegally, or are most of them stolen?

Very possible. My thought process is there seems to be no inability to smuggle Chinese antiques, exotic animals, or stolen cars to and from the US so I’m not sure why guns would be any different or complex
And no clue to second point I’d assume stolen, but that’s purely a guess. 10/2/2017 8:10:07 PM |
