kind of a ridiculously good year in music

A. Savage- Thawing Dawn
Angel Olsen- Phases
Priests- Nothing Feels Natural
Thee Oh Sees- Orc
Kendrick Lamar- Damn.
Waxahatchee- Out In The Storm
Kevin Morby- City Music
St. Vincent- MASSEDUCTION
Future Islands- The Far Field
Mac Demarco- This Old Dog
Moses Sumney- Aromanticism
Sylvan Esso- What Now
Alvvays- Antisocialites
Middle Kids- S/T EP
Grizzly Bear- Painted Ruins
Daniele Luppi & Parquet Courts- MILANO

there are a bunch more that didn’t quite make the cut, but would’ve made the list most years

Agreed, although I think that I've only listened to four of the albums above. My favorites from what I've heard so far:

Big Thief- Capacity
Julie Byrne- Not Even Happiness
Kendrick Lamar- Damn.
Middle Kids- Middle Kids
Slowdive- Slowdive
Tyler, The Creator- Flower Boy

I don't listen to a lot of new music these days, but I liked the Courtney Barnett/Kurt Vile album.

I’m a fan of both (huge Kurt Vile fan), and loved the singles when they were released, but the album had no staying power for me. it just kind of exists.

first tier stuff for me:

KELELA
Sampha
Kendrick
St. Vincent

also good:

LCD
King Krule
King Gizzard "Sketches of Brunswick East" (didn't really care for the other FOUR albums they did this year)

...and I really liked the Stranger Things 2 score. I think it works way better as an album than the first two volumes do.

Too many good albums this year. My top 15 probably look something like this (but there are still plenty of really good albums I hate that I'm not mentioning):

1. Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. (hip-hop)
2. LCD Soundsytem - American Dream (indie electronic)
3. Father John Misty - Pure Comedy (indie folk)
4. Drab Majesty - The Demonstration (post punk)
5. Slowdive - S/T (shoegaze)
6. Cigarettes After Sex - S/T (dream pop)
7. Converge - The Dusk In Us (metal/hardcore)
8. Ulver - The Assassination of Julius Caesar (post punk)
9. St. Vincent - Masseduction (indie pop)
10. Alex Cameron - Forced Witness (pop rock)
11. Perfume Genius - No Shape (indie pop)
12. Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory (hip-hop)
13. Julien Baker - Turn Out The Lights (indie/singer-songwriter)
14. Big Thief - Capacity (indie)
15. Der Weg Einer Freiheit - Finisterre (black metal)

not really, no

water downed version of something that’s been done plenty before and a singer who overcompensates with exuberance
