I don't bother greeting people on the street downtown, but I do greet people when I'm walking around the neighborhood, usually with good morning or good afternoon or whatever.

So when I lived in London, people actively avoid looking at each other in the eye and will get aggressive with their phones to avoid doing so. There I never said hey. When I came back, it was awkward for me to say hey to the people I pass by but now I say hi only if eye contact and really only if I'm in my neighborhood.

ok so when in my neighborhood, and a little less so in my family's neighborhoods, i do try to do the neighborly nod or wave, but it sucks when you try and give it and the other party completely ignores you...one of the many moments in my life i'm like fuccccccccck that was awkward. cause you know they most likely saw you.
