So I've decided to grow out a beard, and I've been letting it rock for a little while now with not much maintenance and care other than trimming it and shaving around the edges, and washing it with a facial wash. A few days ago I started reading up on beards and wow - there's an entire industry dedicated to beard maintenance.

Just curious if anyone else out there uses things like beard balm, oil, cream, etc? And do they really work? I've picked up some beard balm because it seems like it might help with those wild hairs that just stick out no matter what.

i used beard balm when i grew out my "yeard". It helped maintain the shape and condition the ends and prevent splitting. a lot of the beard oils i tried were too heavy.

I don't use anything on my normal sized beard.

I'm a pretty hairy guy. I usually have a beard during the colder part of the year. I stop shaving around September and just let it go outside of maintenance trimming here and there until it gets warm again around April.

Once it is thick enough I will shampoo/condition it 2-3 times a week. I'll usually use beard oil every other day too. My wife got me a thick brush for my beard a few years ago and it feel sooo good after I shower to run the brush through it. Mostly because it does a really good job of scratching the skin underneath.

Buy beard wash/conditioner vs using just regular stuff. I also only actually "wash" mine once or twice a week, which helps to keep it naturally oiled and less frizzy looking

Wraith brings up a good point. A good quality boar hair brush does wonders for the beard. much more than any oil.

I just use regular shampoo ~2x/week. Natural oils seem to do the rest to keep it conditioned and easily styled with a comb and brush.

I had a beard almost to my chest for awhile, and my beard hair is be very frizzy. Anyway, I didn't find that oil helped much, but I did condition it with just normal hair conditioner. A brush sounds like a really good idea but I never tried that

I get some nasty dry skin under my beard if I don’t do anything and end up having to shave and moisturize.
Thus far I’ve tried:
-Honest Amish Beard Balm - I use this most mornings. Tames all but the wildest hairs and helps with beard shape and softness. Moisturizes without going too crazy. I don’t really see a need to deviate to anything else.
-Honest Amish Heavy Duty Beard Balm - Same as above but thicker and greasier, has better holding power but over moisturized and ended up giving me some pimples.
-Honest Amish beard Oil - no holding power but softened and moisturized ok. Very easy to use too much and will make your beard look greasy. Might be perfect for folks that want to add just a little product to help soften your beard. Had a really earthy smell too which some might find a bit too patchouli-esque.
-Scotch Porter Beard Conditioner - probably the best at softening the beard, pretty good at moisturizing, washes out in the shower so very unlikely to make you look greasy, awesome smell. I still use it on a regular basis as a change up, but it just seems like I use a shit ton of it, so I cut back on it.

Can we get some beard pics in this thread? Curious what you guys are working with. Mine isn't long at all, probably maintaining less than an inch. I like beard balm, I have a couple I'm trying out, and I like them but A) they're not cheap, at anywhere from $10-25 per 2 oz tin and B) I feel like once I have it on, I feel greasy, like when I talk on the phone and pull the phone away and look at it, you can see it on the phone. They smell great though.

I generally keep a 3-5" beard.
I use a bit of the "Bad Ass Beard Care" products, specifically the beard wax and oil. I found the balm to be too greasy in appearance.
