Hockman can’t handle pressure well at all.

Knight had no reason to take the ball out of the end zone. And that field position directly led to the safety.

But also. Just run the fucking ball. Our RBs average over 5 ypc today. Cuse run defense isn’t great. Just do the simple thing.

Hockman is capable of making some throws. But he has to know his limitations. And so do the coaches.

He’s attempted 12 passes, taken 3 sacks, and has 3 other non-sack carries. Not sure how many of those carries were designed (maybe just the 1 he fumbled on). But that’s way too many called pass plays. That’s about 17 pass plays to (maybe) 9 called run plays. I’m going off the CBS Sports box score so that could be wrong.

Ok new stats.

15 rushes by players not named Hockman.
15 passes + 7 rushes by Hockman (includes sacks). So that’s roughly 22 pass plays to 15 runs. And that last drive featured 4 pass plays but in 2 minute drill I don’t really count that, since it’s obviously a passing situation. So play calling has been more 50/50. But no reason it shouldn’t be 60/40 in a game like this. We can run. We can’t pass protect today. Cuse doesn’t have a good run defense. So we should run more imo.

I don’t think Ben Finley is the answer either. Hockman’s taking too many sacks and that was an absolutely atrocious decision on the safety. But I haven’t seen anything from Finley to think he’s the answer. He’s a true freshman that showed questionable decision making vs UNC. And I’m assuming evans is either hurt or just really sucks. Hockman has earned the starter position. But this is a brutal game.

INT wasn’t Hockman’s fault. The fumble was nearly a TD, fluky play but it’s hard to fault him there. The safety was atrocious. Taking sacks is atrocious. But maybe we should play to our strengths by running the ball. And also maybe don’t give up a 60 yard bomb for a TD and KO return for TD.

Why is such a huge deal being made about the throw out of the end zone? He was going to get sacked for the safety either way, looked to me like he tried to get rid of it forward (a little to late) and got turned around. But they keep talking like the backwards throw was the most important part of the safety. What am I missing?

Refs might have given Hock forward progress at the 1. Maybe. Hard to say. But it’s more about situational awareness. Knowing where you are on the field and reacting to pressure accordingly. Also, backwards throw could’ve resulted in a Cuse TD if they fell on it in bounds.

It was though. A poorly placed ball led to Riley getting absolutely crushed. He made him turn his back into the defender in order to catch a ball that was behind him on a crossing route. Can't do that.

And that pass out of the back of the end zone likely wouldn't have been a safety if he had just taken the sack as the contact started before he was in the end zone. If that ball had gone the other way, it's much more likely to have been intercepted or intentional grounding than have been either complete or incomplete. Throwing in that situation is always a terrible idea.

But also we're playing against the worst team in the conference and he has 3 giveaways, 2 of which directly gave them points or took points off the board for us.

^it's the qbs job to recognize a blitz and if someone will be coming free and get the ball out quickly if that happens. Hockman just tried to spin out of tackles instead of throwing to a checkdown or throwing out away. You can't expect the OL to block 6 guys.
