America's gold medal hope in the women's 100m just popped hot for marijuana and looks doubtful for the games.
I'm curious if the "thems the rules" crowd will react to Sha'Carri Richardson's suspension the same way they did to state players not getting vaccinated. Or are bullshit rules sometimes indefensible.
And yes, yes I did just make this thread because there was nowhere else to make my brilliant NC state baseball/USA T&F observation. 7/2/2021 9:32:44 AM |

There it is... that's the kind of straw-manning I am used to here on the wolf web.
I didn't compare Covid to marijuana of course. I compared dumb, arbitrary and inconsistently applied rules to another set of dumb, arbitrary and inconsistently applied rules. 7/2/2021 2:13:07 PM |

I didn't mean you were literally comparing marijuana to Covid, of course, and I'm pretty sure you knew that. You're comparing the situations, which aren't really comparable. 7/2/2021 3:29:27 PM |
jocristian All American 7527 Posts user info edit post |
The situations are identical insofar as you have a governing body who created a ruleset ostensibly with the goals of protecting the athletes and the competitive balance of the sport
Except that neither the ruleset banning marijuana or the ruleset mandating regular testing of unvaccinated athletes (but not vaxxed) does those things.
Half the CWS thread is full of folks effectively agreeing with the NCAA's decision because "welp, they were just following the protocols" and "the team should have gotten vaxxed".
Now, you have a similar scenario where the athlete knew the rules and could have just not used weed and yet the response is different.
This is the part where you respond with some variation about how weed is harmless and positive covid tests are not. And I agree with you. But I am specifically arguing the ruleset, not the harmfulness of the thing the rules are trying to protect from. And both rulesets are fuckin dumb and arbitrary--therefore neither Richardson or the Pack baseball team should have been DQed. 7/2/2021 4:08:32 PM |

While this may be a dumb rule, it is consistently applied. All the Olympic athletes are drug tested. Most of them are just smart enough not to smoke weed leading up to the olympics or have other ways of beating the tests.
You are right comparing the baseball team to this, though. The results of both were completely avoidable by the offending parties.
Just because it's a dumb rule doesn't mean it's not a rule.7/2/2021 5:45:19 PM |

And along those lines ^, were the baseball rules inconsistently applied? Seems like they followed their rules.
The rule was to test unvaccinated players. And in the event of an “outbreak”, it is then protocol to start testing vaccinated players on a team. At least that’s what I understood. And that seems like what they did. 7/2/2021 6:20:57 PM |

In both cases the rules are out of sync with current events AND someone made a mistake. However smoking weed affects nobody else, not getting a vaccine affects many others.
Olympics this week also banned a woman for missing a drug test while recovering from an abortion and two other women bc their natural testosterone level was too high. 7/3/2021 1:00:47 AM |

She knew she didn't have it and knew her scores were bringing her team down so she pulled herself out.
Also, no way are that swimmer's parents boomers. She's only 17, so the absolute later boomers would have been like 40 when they had her. Her parents are firmly gen x. Heck there are probably Olympians with millennial parents now. 7/27/2021 8:48:19 PM |

It was clear she didn’t have it after the vault. She didn’t even complete the routine as planned. She scored 1.2 points below her qualification routine. Assuming that she continues to be 1.2 points below the qual scores for the other routines, she’s: .8pts less than her replacement in uneven bars .6pts less than her replacement in beam .7pts less than her replacement on floor That’s 2.1pts and the USA only won silver by 2.0pts. Only above 4th by 2.4pts. Obviously lots of assumptions there and it’s definitely some Monday morning quarterbacking but pts versus replacement is a real thing.
I don’t consider her to be a “hero”. As an elite athlete I’m sure she knows if she has ‘it’. After not hitting the routine on the first exercise she has to know she can be a drag on the team and her results can’t be dropped if she’s having a bad night. 7/27/2021 10:26:43 PM |

^^I'd have to rest at the turns for sure. I'm not a great swimmer. I get tired just watching water polo.
I really hope Simone can compete in the later events.
I also think it's BS that the judges aren't fairly scoring some of her moves because no other gymnast can do them. That's like penalizing Tony Hawk when he was the only one who could pull off a 900.

If I'm recalling correctly, to get an A in the 100 level swimming class at NCSU men had to swim a sub 35 minute. If swimming comes naturally to you it's not "that" hard to do after a semester of swimming. (it was 10 min more for women IIRC).7/29/2021 5:26:18 PM |
