Have you played it yet? I'm curious about picking it up, but I do tend to lose patience with games that are overly hard. I tried Demon's Souls last summer, but got frustrated soon after killing the first boss. I think if Demon's Souls had had more of an overt story to it that might have given me more motivation to keep going. I've heard Demon's Souls does have a story, but it's kind of hidden in the details as you play along; is Elden Ring like that? It's my impression that Elden Ring is more story focused than Demon's Souls was. 2/26/2022 8:23:07 PM |

No, not yet, I'm going to go pick it up today. I've never played the Dark Souls games, but I played Bloodborne and was very impressed by that game. I loved the scenery, the old castles, the towns. I'm hoping for something similar. 2/27/2022 10:24:27 AM |

It's good as hell, get used to dying though. The scenery and atmosphere are amazing. 2/28/2022 12:13:35 AM |

I have a couple of young kids and a job, so I'm not going to be able to play it for long clips at a time, but what I've seen so far is beautiful. It's open-world, not like Bloodborne where you have options but the progression is still pretty linear. 2/28/2022 9:29:17 AM |

This game is pretty much open world Dark Souls, which is fucking awesome. 3/1/2022 11:53:00 AM |

I went ahead and picked this up last weekend. I usually like to finish one game before I start the next and right now I'm playing God of War, but I played around with Elden Ring for 10 or 15 minutes just to take a quick look. I definitely liked what I saw; the open world for this game is beautiful. I'm looking forward to giving it a try after GoW, I'm just afraid that some of the bosses might be so hard that I just quit out of frustration at some point. I'm hoping I'll stick with it enough to finish it; I have a lot of free time next week so I should be able to get started on ER then. 3/1/2022 1:53:40 PM |

My problem is that I'm still trying to finish Breath of the Wild. Two huge games is a lot. 3/1/2022 2:25:56 PM |

This game is amazing. I was a little unsure at first what to do, since you expect so much guidance generally but just embracing exploring has worked out for me so far. Map definitely feels ginormous, Ssooo many books and crannies and weird enemies and stuff going on. 3/31/2022 12:22:43 PM |

^ If you hit a boss you can’t beat just go a different direction
Some of the first bosses really need a ranged attack but other bosses don’t, so kill some bosses that don’t need range, then get a ranged weapon, and go back to the first boss 3/31/2022 6:32:35 PM |

One thing that helped me: If you start as a samurai, use your given uchigatana for your melee weapon. When approaching an enemy, hold L2 down while approaching an enemy, then hit R2 (while continuing the hold on L2) for a downstroke that does good damage. You can often stagger an enemy with a few of these downstrokes together.
I've been making progress, though it's still kind of slow progress, admittedly. Last night I learned of a good rune farming location that I plan on trying tonight:

I'm at level 80 with a sword-and-board fighter and haven't met anything I needed a ranged attack to kill. Maybe there's some optional boss out there that will have me wishing I had a great ranged attack, but I'm about to go kill Morgott, so....4/4/2022 7:42:44 AM |

I looked up an ordering guide yesterday and I’ve been playing in a really weird order… radahn was the first demigod I fought, and I breezed through godrick after. I’m just doing the southern peninsula now and can one shot basically everyone
But Elden ring has so many different ways you can fight, there’s usually a few different strategies to draw from 4/4/2022 8:26:18 PM |

I’m level 77 and I feel like I’m at a little bit of a wall
I haven’t been tracking any quests and every direction I go has people that demolish me. Probably need to pick up a strategy guide… 4/29/2022 10:02:21 PM |

My strategy has been to over level myself as much as I can since I need all the help I can get. I think I'm level 215 now, and I still struggle with some of the bosses; I'm currently stuck on Malenia (and I was stuck on Maliketh as well, until just a couple hours ago). I've gotten in the habit of spending 20 or 30 minutes at the beginning of every session just to rune farm so I can level up more (the video I posted above is the best rune farming site I'm aware of).
ETA: And I've made liberal use of the internet to help me track questlines and get help with bosses.

I don't mean to sound like one of those "git gud" types, but if you invested the time you spend farming runes into practicing fundamentals in less stressful fights, you'd get a much better return and would probably enjoy the game more.
Like not for nothing, Maliketh gave me a fair bit of trouble as well, but I wasn't level 200 trying to fight that dude. I focused on memorizing his patterns in phase 1 to avoid taking as much damage as possible before the real fight starts, then in phase 2, I focused on keeping up the pressure with attacks so I could break his stance. The other super important thing was successfully dodging all his Destined Death attacks.
I had the Blasphemous Claw, but I never really bothered with parrying, so I couldn't rely on it. And I'm not even particularly good at the game. You can do it without wasting a bunch of time farming runes to jack your stats if you just work on the basics, and you'd be doing it faster, too.

I'm enjoying my approach to the game just fine. I didn't even begin this strategy until after getting my ass handed to me repeatedly. I just don't seem to be good at consistently recognizing boss attack moves, nor getting their timing down. I have sometimes considered doing a few trial runs against bosses where I don't fight back, I just watch them to learn their patterns (otherwise, there's so much going on it's hard for me to really follow the patterns) but with some of those bosses, under those conditions, it's hard for me to stay alive long enough to make any observation worthwhile.
Actually, one of the things I struggle with the most: I'm primarily a melee fighter, and when bosses (like the fire giant, for example) jump around a lot, it's hard for me to keep next to them--they'll jump away and I have to waste 5 or 10 seconds just to get back next to them (I know you can ride Torrent during that fire giant fight (except when you do it like I did: Summon Alexander), but I'm more effective at fighting on foot). I recently got the Bloodhound's Step Ash of War that I'm gonna try against Malenia, which lets you move around more quickly, I still have issues there: My preferred weapon is Moonlight Katana, which you can't put Ashes on, so I need a second weapon for it--but in combat I'm not as efficient at switching out weapons as I'd like to be (plus keeping my equip load down to medium can be an issue--I haven't invested much in endurance).
I'm not asking for help or anything, by the way, just stating my point of view relative to my skills (or lack thereof). 5/2/2022 9:46:09 PM |

Picked this up in the Steam summer sale. I had no idea it was a Dark Souls type game (which I’ve never played before). I’m pretty lost and dying a lot, but slowly getting a little better after looking some things up online and practice. One of my biggest problems is remembering the controls. As someone mentioned earlier, switching weapons/hands in combat is giving me trouble, and I frequently accidentally use a health potion. It switches between extremely frustrating when I’m just getting constantly murdered to very satisfying when I’ve gone a long stretch without dying. 7/5/2023 9:57:12 AM |

That pretty much describes the Souls-genre to a T.
You'll get better, start to level and find a setup that works for you. Eventually you'll reach a point where (except for maybe bosses) you'll be wiping through everything pretty easily. Keep at it! 7/6/2023 10:24:08 AM |
