* A few of the really early dates here disagree with NC State's official record books. I've spent a good bit of time researching this and determined that the official NC State book is slightly off in a few regards for our first 2-3 decades of play -- usually, pretty minor differences, like order of games, scores (by a few points), locations, etc. I haven't directly brought this to the university's attention yet, but when I asked what their source was and noted I'd found a few discrepancies, they basically shrugged and said 'we have no idea where this came from, but it's been handed down for decades and we have no reason not to trust it', so, depends who you wanna trust I guess.

That's 45 total season-opening games away from home: 31 true away games, 14 neutral site games. Note that the rate we played them drastically went down after opening Carter Stadium -- old Riddick was way too small to convince many teams to play there due to low gate receipts, resulting in a span where we played only 2 home games a year in the mid 60s. Since the 80s, 3 of our 7 away openers were kickoff classics: BCA in 92, and Chick-Fil-A in 2012 and 2017.

This isn't really related to ECU at all, and doesn't take away from the main idea that it's been a while since we played a road opener. But just wanted to note that we've played a lot more than 5 true road openers.

Traditionally the losing coach is put in the barrel and the resulting liquor is drunk at the next pre game party. However in our current woke society they don't leave him in there, they fill it with Gatorade and he can get out when the Gatorade is gone.
