I don’t really get the Armstrong thing. Obviously he’s had a lotta success with Anae. But he’s gonna come here expecting to start. Is Morris gonna back him up?

I’m cool with brining in another QB for depth because Finley sucks and Lex Thomas will be a true frosh. But I think morris has to be the guy next year

Yeah i don't really get the risk of having Morris bolt. As cool as it is that Lex Thomas is the 3rd Thomas brother to play for Doeren, he's not really much of a big time recruit. Seems to me he got offered for the same reason Finley did - as a legacy recruit who is there mostly for practice depth who won't transfer it because they aren't playing. Plus he's fuckin tiny. If we take Armstrong and Morris leaves, we have to go back to the portal immediately next year for another starter. I don't think that's what you want to do.

I dunno. There was smoke about it a week or two ago then it all seemed to die down. Haven’t seen anything new…until this thread was made.

I thought he was visiting Ok State

If they are really bringing in Armstrong, then I'd say Finley probably backs him up and Morris redshirts (assuming Armstrong were to beat out Morris for the starting job). I'm sure they've thought this through and talked things through with Morris. It'll also give him a chance to learn Anae's offense with one of his veteran QBs and then he'll have three more years to ball out.

Lol no, Morris isn't going to sit behind somebody he's much better than already. That's not good for anybody.

Why would Morris burn another year of eligibility as a backup when he could RS and have three years left instead of two? He came in knowing (thinking) Leary would be our starter this year and probably next, so there's a good chance he wasn't planning on starting until '24 anyway.

Morris came in thinking that Leary would likely be gone after this year. Now Leary is gone, Morris has put good performances in meaningful games on tape and you say he should just sit out and let Finley play ahead of him.

Morris came here to get drafted and in all likelihood not use all his eligibility. He's one of, if not the most highly rated QB recruits we've ever had. He was never planning to be here for 5 years.

What difference does it make with him redshirting if he's not going to play meaningful minutes anyway? I don't think they're going to burn a year of eligibility for him to play one quarter of garbage time against UConn and VMI then ride the pine the rest of the season.

If he does indeed back up Armstrong (not a given if he doesn't transfer – which is still a distinct possibility), there's no reason to put him behind Finley. If he plays in 4 games or less he can redshirt. If Armstrong is hurt, he's gonna play. They aren't going to just play Finley on the off chance that Morris could possibly lose a redshirt season. They sure didn't do it this past season.

If he sticks around, Morris and Armstrong will compete for the starting job. Finley and Thomas and whoever else gets brought in will compete to see who isn't on the scout team.

^ right. Morris could back up and maintain his redshirt.

But morris could also just transfer out if he doesn’t win the starting the job.

We need QB depth. Finley sucks. Lex Thomas is a true frosh. MJ showed flashes but is still inexperienced and raw. I’m all for bringing in depth pieces but bringing in somebody to possible start over MJ for a year feels like you’re just asking for MJ to transfer and then you’re back in a worse position heading into 2024.

I don’t see this as a good situation.

Morris isn’t staying if he isn’t the starter. As a notable recruit who got in and looked really good this year he would have programs at our tier(or better) offering him a chance to start. Why stay and sit?

Find an example of a highly regarded recruit who got in, played very well, then went back to a redshirt the next year? Anyone thinking that… it’s just not how things work.

If Armstrong comes and starts Morris leaves and the staff better be then ready for Lex and have confidence he’s the guy after. If they are high on Morris this doesn’t seem to make sense risking he leaves. And it’s hard to imagine Armstrong comes without thinking he would be the starter? Unless I’m missing something.

Fair, but that’s pre-transfer portal logic. Everything is different now. Morris could start next year and still end up on 3 teams. I think Finely’s Mayo performance scared the shit out of our staff. There is no way they were going into 2023 with a qb room of finely , lex, and an injury prone Morris. If he leaves so beat it, get used to guys we like coming and going.

Dude had one injury and now he's injury prone?

Also people should really stop getting their hopes up about Thomas. He was incredibly lightly recruited and is maybe 5'10. Maybe a guy who had no other offers and is small turns out to be a great QB, or maybe he's just like Finley and was brought in simply as a depth piece because of his family ties. Either way, if both him and Finley are on the depth chart next year then it's not a good sign for us. I mean it kinda makes sense in this modern day when players can transfer out with no repercussions to take guys like that every few years so you know you'll have guys who can run your offense in practice settings who aren't likely to leave.

I don't think Finley's bowl performance scared the staff – they already knew he was bad. It's why he was on the scout team this year as a junior.

Also, what if we play 2 qbs at the same time next year? No one would expect it!

Finley will be 3rd string if Brennan commits.

Morris still has eligibility left after this year.

Why would we not want someone that is up to speed right out of the gate with Anae's system and obviously capable in ACC play?

Yall might think Morris is that guy, but I am not sold. If he's as good as you think he is, then he can beat Brennan for the starting job. Otherwise he should sit behind him a year and learn the system.

Pretty standard stuff.

If Brennan can compete in the ACC and win games in Anae's system, he's the starter.

Yes. Getting hurt your freshman year is a small red flag. I can’t help you if don’t think brining in a very sought after veteran qb is a good thing—With a current qb room consisting of a young guy with potential and two guys who would be walk ons at other top 25 programs .

Also. Morris could transfer at any moment with or without Armstrong. It’s the landscape we’re in.

Sure. But he’s far less likely to transfer when he’s the clear starter.

I’m cool with bringing in Armstrong. But I just think we should be clear about the possible repercussions of it.

Morris would be a sought after transfer. He’s got actual ACC game film for schools to look at it and he’s a rising Soph. Teams should definitely be sniffing around him if he doesn’t win the job. But I guess we’ll just cross that bridge if/when the time comes.

Yeah he was bad in 2022. Anae was his OC in 2021 when he was good.

Cuse QB sucked ass in 2021 and was solid in 2022 with Anae.

How many teams have had 2 Heisman finalists in the same season? Quite certain some of the loaded Bama teams recently have had a QB/WR or QB/RB both as finalists.

But pretty sure there’s never been 2 QBs from the same team. As finalists in the same year. we will make history!

No, Morris is going to win acc player of the year and Armstrong is going to win the Heisman. Each will not be finalists for the other award.

Having watched both the State game and parts of the LSU game, i feel confident that Armstrong and Jayden Daniels were basically identical yesterday. Glad to see this chart confirm my thoughts.

He’d probably still be in the running for the Heisman were it not for him sacrificing 4 games to show that Morris is a pussy, but he may still win the Grownassman
