I get the former, but not the latter. And it seems like the latter is becoming more common/accepted

"Identifying as a race" is a pretty old concept, at least among races who were discriminated against. Nonwhite people who are "white passing" in the United States have some pretty strong incentives to identify as white in a lot of contexts. Of course, this can take a lot of forms and is perhaps more nuanced than gender identity, which for most people is essentially binary.
In a situation where race is being discussed, does a white-passing individual "identify" as white if they simply refrain from announcing that they are black? Or do they have to actually claim to be white? What if they make a conscious effort to appear white, but acknowledge their blackness when asked?
I got no qualms with people trying to pass as white to avoid the worst parts of racism. I wish circumstances didn't make people think it necessary to do so, but that's the world we live in. What I can't get behind is white people claiming other ethnicities out of some cultural fetish or the desire to profit from benefits intended for marginalized people. I haven't seen much evidence of that kind of thing becoming more accepted, and certainly for my part, I find it repugnant. 9/7/2023 1:02:06 PM |

Oh come on, nobody else is going to mention Elizabeth Warren
We are all of mixed race, really, but what about children of interracial couples? I guess it mostly depends on how they were raised, but do they identify as white? black? What do they put on paper when the question is asked?
