instead of NCSU, officially

I see "NCST" still used today in some places for sports, and in some old stuff

NCST was a travesty. It was NCSU to begin with, and then they tried that NCST for a while. Good riddance.

AFAIK NCST was an effort by ESPN to standardize their school abbreviations -- everything ending in "State" got "ST" at the end. I can't recall ever seeing any university-published material which read NCST

NCST came about because Marye Anne Fox pushed for everything to be branded as NC STATE rather than NCSU, North Carolina State, or anything else. And we've been stuck with that shit ever since. Other schools don't have this, you don't ever see SDST, AST, tOST, it's SDSU, ASU and OSU. We were very much the exception and not the rule and it's a self inflicted burn.

I prefer NCST myself

I think ending with a T is harder than a U
