+10 if he can actually get rid of artificial dyes in our food. 11/13/2024 11:54:42 AM |

There's a ton of stuff I'd love to see him do with our food, and medicine and healthcare.
(like, why does EVERYTHING have to have added sugar or artificial sweetener in it? We got some tortillas the other day, started eating them, and were like "why are these so sweet?" It turn out there was a bunch of Splenda in them. Why? We had to throw them away because they tasted so weird/gross)
But I'm gonna bet he won't accomplish much, if anything postitive (if he is even appointed to any kind of position that can get anything done.. and if he is, he likely won't be there too long) 11/13/2024 1:25:32 PM |

The churros from Aldi were the same way - initially tasty but then had this weird aftertaste. Looking through the ingredient list, it had some sort of artificial sweetener…totally unnecessary, and I would think more expensive to use than plain ol’ sugar.
There is so much wrong with our food industry.
The stupid thing is, I bet you wouldn’t find a single American that was like “Naw man, I want those artificial dyes in my food”. I better 100% of folks that don’t have money to make in the food industry would agree, but nothing can ever get done.

I agree with you, but I know of one example. My dad. I've tried to frame it as getting ripped off. You think you are buying peanut butter, but instead it's chemicals mixed with palm oil and sugar to make it taste kind of like peanut butter! And he still doesn't seem to care.
If you take the cost of "high dollar" peanut butter adjusted for inflation it costs the same as the 1960s versions.

Well, is the "high dollar" peanut butter the "natural" kind that separates and [doesn't] com eback together? Because that drippy crap is annoying. I'm OK with a little chemistry to avoid separation of my nut butter. 11/13/2024 1:53:57 PM |

^ Yeah and I'm sure there is a mid ground where it's just peanut butter and not mixed with palm oil. 11/13/2024 2:06:54 PM |

i'm all for healthier food. but it is important to answer this question and not just "food chemicals bad". as usual, it comes down to incentives.
humans like sugar. it tastes good. so food manufacturers do it because people like the taste of their products more and therefore buy them more when they add sugar. sugar also acts as a preservative. longer shelf lives make it easier to distribute food nationally and internationally without worrying as much about spoilage. artificial sweeteners are often cheaper than fresh/natural ingredients. consumers want low prices, this is one way we get them. also, since the 80s/90s when fats started becoming the food boogeyman, the industry evolved to compensate the lost flavor that fats provide with sweeteners.
if we shift away from these practices, consumers will have to adapt to a different landscape of food quality, taste, availability and price. I think we can do it if we put our mind to it, but in the end the incentives always win. not sure RFK is just gonna try to self-righteously steamroll the food industry or work with them to understand all these tradeoffs and find a new healthier equilibrium
i want more science in our food, not less.

But I don't think most things need as much sugar in them (even if the expiration date might come sooner). I want to eat a granola bar because it's healthy. But it's hard to find one that doesn't have 15 grams of sugar added to it. I want to eat yogurt because it's healthy, but some of them have 20+ grams of added sugar. Why does a whole-wheat tortilla need Splenda in it? I don't want my tortilla to be sweet.
I don't really care for 'sweet' that much. I always get seconds of the meal and skip the dessert.

But on the upside, if there are actually Senate Confirmation Hearings instead of recess appointments, we might be treated to the world's second worst debate in history in terms of painful listening when Senator Susan Collins and RFK Jr. go toe-to-toe. As long as rfkjr sticks to the science like he claims he will, he’ll do fine. I think unlike most people in trumps orbit RFK does actually want to help Americans.

We had chemtrail fluid sticker on our Pitts It's fun when doing Aerobatics so kind of into it I guess. Will send a pic.

I guess that's why he makes an effort to talk about how amazing the measles vaccine is in every talk today.
Quote : | "In primary teeth, known more commonly as baby teeth, there was a worsening in tooth decay in Calgary since the discontinuation of fluoridation in 2011, compared to Edmonton, where water is still fluoridated. In fact, the number of tooth surfaces with decay per child increased by 3.8 surfaces in Calgary during the time frame of the study, compared to only 2.1 in Edmonton. This is a statistically significant difference. The average child has about 20 teeth with four or five surfaces per tooth." |
Nuance: should fluoride be in everyone's drinking water if you were to find out the extra tooth decay is in just the poor population?
You ok with IQ risk to the whole population in trade of tooth decay risk in a subset?
