If this happens, is it a good thing? Should it happen?

the resulting company will go bankrupt within 5 years and get bought out by the japanese govt. neither company has innovated in over 10 years

Its a very bad thing. The Japanese government has to be sweetening the pot here for Honda, because it makes no sense for them to want anything to do with Nissan.

I thought they basically just wanted to use each other's factories

Makes sense for Nissan, they were doing pretty bad other than Rogues, at least thats how I feelI don't get why Honda feels the need to help out Nissan though. I wonder what their upside is, other than I guess worrying Toyota would gain all of Nissans marketshare?

OK seems like the merger talks will be suspended as Honda, apparently, wants to do a takeover of Nissan, and Nissan is not having that of course.Mitsubishi have cut their profit forecasts by 76%.Seems like Mitsubishi, and maybe Nissan as well, will fade into oblivion in the coming years. They barely offer anything interesting/innovative anymore, and have retired most of their models anyway. If Honda and Toyota stay complacent and don't learn from this, their future could also be jeopardized in the coming decades owing to increasingly insane competition from China. And whats up with Subaru? Seems like it's also fading away slowly.

Subaru isn't going anywhere, nor are their sales going down. However, they have almost completely lost their identity as (more or less) a subsidiary of Toyota. Dog friendly and affordable AWD are pretty much all they have going for them.Very glad Honda isn't merging with Nissan; nothing good in it for them.
