This has been done to fucking death.

Chit Chat was originally the Trash Bin, the board where all the deleted threads went. It was opened up to premium users so we could read it, then we were allowed to post in it, and then they gave it to the general public in the form of Chit Chat. Now, Chit Chat houses the threads that you know would get deleted anyway. More serious topics still belong in the Lounge.

back in the day when chit chat was just a recycle bin, did a good amount of threads get deleted from the lounge?

There seems to be a fine line between the lounge and the soap box, because I see tons of news reports in the soap box, when teh description says that belongs to the lounge

"basically anything serious"

"news" and "serious" are not mutually exclusive. in fact, news usually implies serious, at least, the news worth talking about.
