I didn't like Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl, but it was mainly because she's a horrible actress and the character was poorly written.

^^Yeah, when they said Barbara was Alfred's niece, I was completely "WTF?!"

Thank you all for not putting in any (major) spoilers. Frosh and Sonia, I'll take take into consideration your critiques, but I guess like Sonia said, critiquing just comes natural to them as english majors, and so I have to take it as just that. Regardless of any inconsistencies with the Batman comics, I think this movie's gonna fucking rock.

I'm not whining. It's an interesting "remix" of the mythos. Some classic elements were shifted around, different flavors were put into the mix, whatever. Some people are gonna like it. I think it sucked.

Put it this way: I went in expecting a cappuccino, and instead I got a lousy pour and ended up with a latte. Some people are gonna be just as satisfied with a latte, and some people are gonna prefer the latte. I think lattes are for faggots; a cappuccino is what they sold me on, and a cappuccino is what I paid for.

So anyways, I never read year one. But I do like Batman and I do have a boner for Ra's Al Ghul and I think it was a pretty solid production alltogether. Except for Katie Holmes, who is now homely as the queen of the sea cows.

If you have a boner for Ra's al-Ghul, you should be pissed off that he wasn't in the movie. They had a bald Asian dude they called Ra's al-Ghul, but he was nothing like the character in the comics.

SPOILER ALERT, DOODS.

Did you not understand that Watanabe was not Ra's? He was just some chump stand-in. My biggest reservation about the film was to have some slant play a Portuguese dude, but then they were like WHAT NOW NIGGA IT'S QUI GON. Fuck, the relief of that moment was enough to settle me down. And I think the spirit of Ra's was definitely in the character, if in a slightly different manner.

HERE BAE NO MORE SPOILERS!!!

I must have literally been asleep when they revealed that. That's still not Ra's al-Ghul. Ra's is a nearly immortal eco-terrorist of indeterminate ethnicity, not a European captain of a ninja little league team who's obsessed with fear and murder.

Seriously, when that old crumpet introduced Bruce to Ra's, he was like "That's not Ra's. Ra's died. That's just some chank." And then Schindler's all like "Oh shit nigga but what if I'M Ra's? OH SNAP DID I JUST BLOW YOUR MIND? YOU BURNT MY DAMN HOUSE. BREAK YOSELF, FOOL!"

You know who does a good indeterminate ethnicity? Christopher Lambert.

But seriously, lots of actors play roles across their racial lines. Look at John Turturro. He played a Mexican in The Big Lebowski, a Jew in Miller's Crossing, it's a common thing. And with make-up? Come on. You could do Ra's dead on.

you missed my point. in The Big Lebowski, Turturro wasn't of indeterminate ethnicity, he was a mexican. in Miller's Crossing he wasn't of indertiminate ethnicity, he was a Jew...

let me ask you this. let's say when casting for the movie they came across someone that could have passed off for your "indeterminate ethnicity", but he couldn't act for shit. i'm talkin like drivers' ed video acting level. and then on the other hand they had Liam Neeson, who falls short of your expectations of ethnicity, but can act a hell of a lot better. which of these two men would you have play the part?

I really, really, really dug the homo vibe from Murphy. Every Batman story should have elements of homoeroticism, and I'm glad it came from SOMEWHERE in this movie. I didn't care for this movie's treatment of Crane as the Scarecrow, though. Why play down the costume? He brings out A MASK and MAKES AN APOLOGY for it. Batman's costume being explained as gadgets, fine, that's how the modern comics explain all that stuff. It's not tights anymore. But the Scarecrow is a goddamn nutjob. He actually stuffs the suit with straw. Come on, why you gotta fritter away such an important part of the character? So the kids won't think it's silly? All that Batman shit is silly!

But look, guys, my point is that there are plenty actors of vague ethnicity. That's the least of my complaints about the way Ra's al-Ghul was done in this movie.

well you def. have legitimate complaints regarding the movie

but i still think it was awesome. i didnt see it as shitting all over the comics, nor did i see it as shitting on the Keaton version, nor the Animated Series.

it was just another retelling of a great character, with some changes, yes, but thats what makes it Nolan's original work.

but if robin, batgirl, or oracle ever show up in this new movie series... then thats where i stop watching. Bale's batman wasn't built for a sidekick.

I agree with frosh that they didn't even come close to getting Ra's al-Ghul "right." However, I'll bet if you poll some random moviegoers and ask them who Ra's al-Ghul is the only ones who will know will be people who read the comics obsessivly or watched "Batman: The Animated Series" when they were kids (now B:TAS got Ra's right...good ish. oh and you can buy all B:TAS on DVD now...random side note). Also, Ra's ethnicity is the least of the complaints about him...he's always been mysterious...who cares where he's from. The point is he's a genious on the level of (argueably above) The Batman and his plans are setup on the scale of centuries not years. I think they got a bit of that in this movie but he just didn't exude the raw mystical power that Ra's possesses.

Quote :

but he wasn't "The Scarecrow" at that point. He was Dr. Crane using a crazy mask and gas to make people go batshit crazy. He only became the Scarecrow after Batman gasses him. I like how Batman, in essence, creates Scarecrow here. Not sure if this is how it happened in the comics because I can't remember Scarecrow's origin atm...will google later. Though I am a little disappointed that Crane hadn't made himself immune to the poison...total amateur.

I would have liked to see this too but Scarecrow wasn't really a Villian in this movie. It was Johnathan Crane as the villian and he becomes Scarecrow at the end (they get mad props for not offing him...Scarecrow needs his own flick). I also thought it was appropriate that Rachel was able to take Scarecrow down so easily. She was immune to his gas and without fear, the Scarecrow is nothing but a puny psychotic man.

So Crane's gas is supposed to pretty much make you scared of everything? How come that little kid wasn't going crazy? He was pretty calm for a little kid who just witnessed a scarecrow riding a horse that has RED EYES AND IS BREATHING FIRE. I know that if I were 9 years old and saw that I would shit myself. I would also think that all of the civilians would be scared of each other too.

Keep in mind that it wouldn't be comparable to what Batman experienced by getting a facefull of the shit in its pure form.

I was expecting him to look at Katie and just like freak out, though.

I can only assume the fact that her protective embrace somehow overwhelmed the kid's fears with regard to her. Also notice that he didn't really look at her very often...

I'm also suprised that it took as long as it did for someone to point out that Watanabe's character was *not* Ra's.

I'm hoping to see this tonight! AxlBonBach's opinion (didn't read through the other pages heh) sounds about right. I'm a huge fan of the original cheese TV shows, but am not going to base my opinions of this movie on that.

What I need to do is look into some original Batman comics so I know who you guys are talking about (Ra mostly).

Excellent movie. The fight scenes were pretty blah, but the car chase sequence was money. I love that the movie does such a strong exploration of who Bruce Wayne (I don't care if some detail is inconsistent with the comics) is in so many aspects of his life. I don't know if I like it more than Mask of the Phantasm, but it's definitely the best live-action Batman movie.

A good movie, or what I could see of it. Got there late and Southpoint puts the screens 6 in from the front row. Couldn't even see the whole screen. Had to keep looking left to right to see the people. And the high-action scenes I missed entirely.

I thought Ra's Al Ghul character was great. Very different from the cartoon, but still faithful in many ways. He had a disregard for human life in what he perceives as the "greater good" and still very disciplined and contemplative.
