this furthers my theory that all those hurricanes back in the day that were 200+ mph wind speed never really got that high
because we are seeing crazy pressures and winds less that 200 mph 10/19/2005 9:52:38 AM |

i kinda find the path it's taking interesting, if you view a map of water temperatures, this things projected path goes through the warmest water it can all the way up the eastern seaboard
i know outside forces more heavily affect the path than anything....just seems interesting 10/19/2005 1:49:17 PM |

True. Were they flying into storms back when Camille was around? How come nothing seems to touch that 190 level? Camille's pressure was nowhere near this low. 10/19/2005 1:50:44 PM |

wind speed between 175-190 both = extreamly deadly
the surge with this whore has to be insane though 10/19/2005 1:53:12 PM |
Doss2k All American 18474 Posts user info edit post |
If you look at the forecast path notice that huge jump from Sat. to Sun. that means the winds are really gonna pick this up and move it which is not conducive to maintaining anywhere near this strength, it will be like most of the other cat 5 storms, get real big out in the open and by landfall maybe a cat 3 at best 10/19/2005 1:56:39 PM |

" The last reconnaissance flight was made early Sunday afternoon, and the crew recorded a central pressure of 26.61 inches (901 mb) and clocked maximum winds at more than 200 mph near the center (USACE 1970). Hurricane-force winds extended 60 miles from the center and gales outward about 180 miles. The storm was now at its peak and was located less than 100 miles from the mouth of the Mississippi River."
At landfall: " There were no records of winds near the eye of the storm, but estimates ranged up to 190 mph. The tidal surge reached an unprecedented height of 22.6 feet above mean sea level at Pass Christian and was nearly 6 feet above mean sea level as far east as Gulf Shores, Alabama (USACE 1970). Near the west end of the Bay St. Louis bridge, of 26.85 inches of pressure was recorded. " 10/19/2005 4:16:32 PM |
