anybody else think that episode seemed a little strange? I don't know, but something didnt' feel right about it. I don't want to say that it's still a dream, but the whole episode felt off. I could be wrong, but it was just a feeling.

also, anyone notice that the window in tony's room had almost the exact skyline as the one in his coma dream? they showed it almost the entire episode

I doubt that this episode was a dream, the skyline probably just represents the feelings he carried over from the coma, he mentioned it twice. It seems he remebers a pretty good bit from it.

anyone else notice that Alan, jen's friend, had on sunblock, but it was night outside? I'm thinking that preacher might've been the devil, and that other older guy might've been god or the holy spirit? I know I'm reaching, but I definitely think there's something strange going on. that episode just didn't add up

here's that new Sepinwall article since Restricted is slacking off lol

Quote :
"Things change, but people stay the same
Monday, April 3, 2006

WARNING: This column contains major plot spoilers for last night's "Sopranos" episode. If you're waiting until later in the week to watch, read on at extreme peril.

PEOPLE don't change.

If there is one simple, persistent message of "The Sopranos," it's that you can get a new haircut, switch jobs, find another lover, embrace some new self-help philosophy, but no matter how much you talk about it, at heart you're going to be the same person you've always been. (And if you're a character on this show, chances are that person is pretty rotten.)

Here's Tony, slowly recovering from an incident that by all rights should have killed him. He's talking a good game, chatting up the visiting evangelicals and the friendly scientist down the hall, telling a nurse he doesn't feel like his old self. And yet he's sneaking out of the hospital for stogie breaks, getting chesty with Phil Leotardo and basically ruining the life of the Barone family so he can protect his own interests.

And here's Paulie, who receives the kind of information that should fundamentally alter his sense of self, and how does he respond? With the same woe-is-me, the-world-owes-me-some-ice-cream-cake attitude he displays under even the best of circumstances, blaming his own mother for the crime of taking him in and raising him, blaming Jason Barone for the bigger sin of having a biological mother who loves him more than she loves life itself. (You'll note the $4,000 a month shakedown is the exact cost of keeping Nucci in Green Grove.)

And in case we doubted the depressing moral of the story, there's Tony sitting at the curb outside the hospital, declaring, "From now on, every day is a gift," as Janice -- the show's poster girl for staying the same deep down, no matter how often you repaint the facade -- rolls her eyes at him.

Sure, Tony may have forgiven the paramedic from picking his pocket (assuming the guy really did it), but the whole scene reminded me of that sequence from "Schindler's List" where Schindler persuaded Amon Goethe to show power through mercy -- which lasted for about three scenes before Goethe got bored and went back to shooting people in the head.

Everyone has a selfish agenda. Tony's being friendly to Aaron, a man he once threw food at during a Thanksgiving dinner (he was Janice's narcoleptic boyfriend in season three), because he's looking to acquire a Get Out of Purgatory Free card. Deluxe's manager is happy his client got shot because it'll boost record sales (and his cut). Hesh's daughter is fond of born-again Christians, but only because they're supportive of Israel. The insurance rep smiles and flirts with Tony, but she just wants him off the company books. About the only person who's not blatantly looking out for number one is Bell Labs retiree John Schwinn, so of course he suffers a fate worse than death: a man who loves to talk (and is good at it) robbed of the ability to speak.

We still have 16 episodes to before the end, so maybe Tony could genuinely learn from his mistakes. But if there's a character changing right here and now, it's Carmela. When she warned Tony about Vito, it was the first professional counsel she's offered him in the series. For her entire adult life, she's tried to enjoy the spoils of Tony's work while holding herself apart from it. But after she confessed to Dr. Melfi last week that she had no illusions about Tony's career -- and that she was attracted to that part of him in the first place -- maybe she's prepared to become less Kay Corleone and more Lady Macbeth.

Remember what I wrote two weeks ago about the two separate but occasionally intersecting groups of "Sopranos" fans? Well, last night's show had Tony debating metaphysics and quantum mechanics with his hospital neighbors and analyzing the meaning of Ojibwe philosophy. But it also had Paulie beating a guy with a lead pipe and Bacala shooting a rapper in the behind. Something for everyone.

(When I complimented David Chase on that particular balance, he shrugged and said he and the other writers don't set out to structure episodes that way; either it happens in the writing process or it doesn't.)

Some other random notes on "The Fleshy Part of the Thigh":

The show has done the gangstas-who-love-gangsters story before, back when Christopher was hanging with rap star Massive Genius in season one, but like the reprise of the Christopher in Hollywood theme last week, this was funny enough to excuse the rehashing.

Did you catch Paulie busting out Ralphie's pronunciation of "whore" ("hoo-er") when he was berating Nucci for lying to him? Don't forget that one of the last things Ralphie did before he died was make an obscene prank call to Nucci. Ah, the circle of life.

More fuel for the theory that the Costa Mesa scenes were all a creation of Tony's own unconscious mind: He sees a "Kung Fu" rerun on TV and mentions he used to watch it as a kid, which could explain what bald monks were doing in his Kevin Finnerty fantasies.

And so, AJ has followed his inevitable career path: clerk at Blockbuster. How much do you want to bet he sits around all day watching the soft-core R-rated thrillers?

Even if there hadn't been all those scenes building up to it, was there any way that Take Your Son To Work Day lovefest with the garbageman and his kid was going to end well?

So who's Tony's biggest problem this year: Paulie (who's looking out for number one more than ever), Vito (who has his eyes on the throne), Phil (who's still bitter over Tony B. killing his brother) or Johnny Sack? With the series headed towards the finish line, it's nice that Chase and company didn't feel the need to import another character actor as this season's Special Guest Villain, but are relying on people we already know.

Did that look exchanged between Meadow and Jason Barone mean anything more than two attractive young people checking each other out? Hey, if Vito ever manages to pry Finn away, Meadow's going to need a shoulder to cry on. Plus, she's been a good heat shield for innocent guys in trouble with one of Tony's captains.

Alan Sepinwall may be reached at asepinwall@starledger.com, or by writing him at 1 Star-Ledger Plaza, Newark, N.J. 07102-1200. "

actually, [no]

he accepted a deal that would take some burden off of the Barone's and Phils crew at the end, when he says "there's enough garbage for everybody" or something to that effect

people stay the same, but i think the persistent theme this season will be that Tony is making an attempt to change moreso than anybody else because of his coma/purgatory experience

the stoagie thing--well, he is a fattie

him initially trying to chat up that broad that works for the insurance company would be a better example than the garbage-Barone deal

also, i think there will be minimal to no philandering by this season--or atleast a noble effort not to...

and i can't help but feel like someone close to Tony, someone he loves is going to end up dead. i hope to god its not Meadow (i can't get the Mario Puzo plotlines out of my head)

and the sooner Vito gets whacked, the better everbody will feel

In spite of my entry above, best line of the episode by far is two words from Hesh (I missed it first go around, glad I found it again, listening to those religious nuts, both the jew and the preacher gets my blood pressure going)...

Beth (obviously naive and a bit brainwashed): You can disagree with evangelicals but they're great friends of the Jews, because Isreal is the Holy Land.
Hesh (condescendingly and pessimistic, speaking from wisdom): You Wait.

ZING!!

He threw up in the hospital whenever he got pissed off about johnny sack. And he threw up twice after hitting that guy.

I think there might be a theme where he pukes whenever he does something involving anger.

Also, am I correct in assuming he picked that guy because he was the tuffest to show he wasnt weak anymore.

Yeah, Vito's reaction was not consistent with his character's personality. Why didn't he follow the two soldiers out and kill them?

Christopher has continued to bring the funny, especially the Allegra comment and the allusion to The Godfather part 1. He's definitely my favorite character right now.

Is anyone else under the Impression that Toney and his Bodyguard/Driver might have set that up? I know Tony wanted to show he was tough and not weak, but it is hard for me to believe that he could really take that egg head so easily...

Great Episode though...can't wait to find out what is going on with Vito...he can't be dead-they gotta show how it goes down.

Chris's comments about Allegra...hillarious...What the fuck does that have to do with cold medicine.

And Tony falling down and everyone helping him and his reaction...priceless

"Bosses' crumbling facades
Monday, April 10, 2006

WARNING: This column contains major plot spoilers for last night's "Sopranos" episode. If you're waiting until later in the week to watch, read on at extreme peril.

High on my list of Things I Don't Need To See: Vito Spatafore dancing at a leather bar.

Now, "The Sopranos" has had plenty of things way up on that soul-scarring list: Sean Gismonte going to the bathroom mid-robbery, Janice having sex at gunpoint with Richie, Janice doing things in bed with Ralphie that I'm not legally allowed to describe. But Vito going all Village People biker man may top them all.

So what happens now? I'm told that was a New York club, which makes sense: Even Vito wouldn't be dumb enough to shake his groove thing at a Jersey bar. And since those two soldiers looked like they were about to tell someone, that means Phil Leotardo -- Vito's cousin-by-marriage -- knows. Does he kill Vito to defend his cousin's honor and the wiseguy code? Or does he hold it over Vito to use him in his quest for brotherly revenge on Tony? Assuming Phil's already been told, let's just say things are about to get mighty interesting across the Hudson River.

The leather bar scene was a little cheap and over-the-top, even for a show that once had a character die on the toilet. This season's first four hours had done an impressive job of turning Vito into a creepy, unique character, but once the writers put him in that outfit, they turned him into a joke again. Loved the motel scene, scored to Jim Ed Brown's "The Three Bells," but there were ways to out Vito that weren't so Al Pacino in "Cruising."

But before we all bleach our eyeballs to cleanse them of that image, let's look at the center of this great episode: the wedding of Allegra Sacrimoni and the loss of face suffered there by both Tony and Johnny Sack.

Johnny is such a fascinating character because he's so much like Tony: smarter, more family-oriented and more sentimental than the goons under him, and prone to uncontrollable bouts of rage. So it's fitting that the two bosses' power bases are crumbling at the same time.

Johnny's jail stint and Tony's shooting have them losing control over their armies. They have a chance to put on a show of strength in front of the combined elite of the New York and New Jersey mobs, and what happens? Tony nearly faints while taking his shoes off, and Johnny starts sobbing when the marshals ruin Allegra's perfect send-off. (After his big Stay Strong speech to his family, Johnny was the first to crack under the pressure; if he had just kept his chin up, smiled and blown Allegra a kiss as he was being cuffed, everything would have been more or less fine.)

Tony eventually acquiesced to Johnny's request to take out Rusty (a k a "The Mayor of Munchkin-Land'), but you could argue that his earlier refusal planted the seed in Phil's mind about Johnny's vulnerability.

Last week, I wondered if Tony was ever capable of changing. Though he's physically weakened, the people around him seem to be changing more than he is. Last week, Carmela warned Tony about Vito, and last night Dr. Melfi was livelier and more proactive in therapy than she's been with him in a long time. She even gave him advice on being a better mob boss, which she refused to do in earlier seasons.

The final sequence, with Tony sizing up all the guys at Satriale's, wondering both who he could beat and whose defeat would put the biggest scare into the troops, was masterfully written by Terence Winter, shot by Steve Buscemi and played by James Gandolfini. Plus, the early road rage scene with Perry ("first runner-up, Mr. Teenage Bloomfield") set it up perfectly. Perry was the ideal choice for three reasons: 1) his physique (making the victory more impressive), 2) he was the only guy in the room hot-headed enough to fight back (ibid), and 3) he's really just an overgrown kid ('My mom says I should count 10, but I never remember') with muscles but no street smarts.

The episode closed with doo-wop, which David Chase usually avoids because it's a mob cliché. Here, the song not only reinforced Tony's old-school maneuver, but the "Godfather" motif from the wedding scenes (the song even kept repeating the days of the week, albeit not in Apollonia's "Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Wednesday" order).

Some other random thoughts on "Mr. & Mrs. John Sacrimoni Request ...":

Another leader showing weakness: Junior, still technically Tony's boss, and his childlike "I want to go home!" at the mental hospital.

Silvio sleeps with that head of hair? You mean to tell me that's not supposed to be a rug? I've been willing to accept the presence of that hair-helmet for five-plus seasons because I assumed Sil, like Steve Van Zandt, was wearing a toupee. I will believe many dubious things this show has told me: That no one ever leaves physical evidence behind at murder scenes, or that Adriana really thought Chris could be a male model. But Silvio's hair is real? Nuh-uh.

The Arab guys from episode two stopped by the Bing looking to buy guns. Paging Agent Harris. ... Too bad they didn't get Chris' "Don't leave home without it" joke; between that, his Allegra quip ('What the (bleep)'s that got to do with cold medicine?') and his "Godfather" wedding day advice ('You shoulda asked not to do this'), the man was on a roll last night.

Changing children: Meadow is sympathizing with the Family again ('Are you kidding? The government did that?'), and AJ has ditched last season's talk of an event-planning career. He's also found the perfect girlfriend, who can puff on a cigarette while declaring she doesn't eat fish because of the toxins.

Know your Family: The heavyset bald guy who was so attentive to Tony's needs is Dante Greco, who appeared a few times last year. He reports to Vito -- for now, at least.

Hypocrisy, thy name is Paulie Walnuts. A week ago, he's sobbing like a baby in the hospital hallway, and last night he's all too eager to join Phil's pile-on about Johnny's tears.

Finally, someone walks down the driveway to get The Star-Ledger, only it's Carm. Props to whoever wrote the "Don Squirrel-Leone" headline; you did our copy editors proud.

Alan Sepinwall may be reached at asepinwall@starledger.com, or by writing him at 1 Star-Ledger Plaza, Newark, N.J. 07102-1200."
