batman can beat anyone given time to prepare

if superman just decided all of a sudden to kill batman and immediately set out to do it, bats would be so much pulpy goop

and concerning the movie, i'm on the same wavelength as ender, i was rocking the big goofy grin the entire way through it

so we will know after this weekend how many numbers the Pirates 2 opening takes away. this could be a make or break weekend for Singer in whether or not he will be directing the next one (if there is one). So if you loved this movie and want to see a sequel- skip Pirates 2 and go see Superman Returns for a second or third time. - I will be staying home.

^ i don't think that's the case at all. If the movie makes a reasonable amount they will make another one. And what they don't make at the theater they'll make on rentals. Also, if the same people are invovled the effects shouldn't cost quite as much now that they know how to do what they want. And now they're making actors commit to terms for sequels before the first is even released. So the actors probably won't cost them that much more to return considering most of that is probably already settled. There will be another superman movie. Whether or not Singer is involved could depend on several different things. I wouldn't mind seeing Kevin Smith's screenplay, which the producers rejected (just to see what it was about).

How is not "conventional" now? Blue body suit with red and yellow S-logo on the front and red pelvic area, yellow belt, red boots, and red cape (did the cape have a yellow S-logo on the back in the movie? I don't remember). What did you not like about the movie's costume?

I thought the dude who played Superman did a good job all around, but I sort of felt like he should've been a little more built. I'm not saying Superman has to be diesel, he just seemed to be smaller than he should have been.

Huh? Is that sarcasm? Be/c the suit looked quite "conventional" to me.

Yeah he does, but the idea is that superman could kill him a variety of ways that didn't involve getting close to him

i wasn't thrilled with the muted color scheme - i mean i don't want it as bright as reeves but i'd like it a bit more vibrant and richer than it was

oh and a bigger shield on him

the S belt and the Ses on the backs of the boots didn't really bug me, but the lack of an S on the cape did just a bit

my only beef was when Perry said "But does he still stand for truth, justice,....." Could he not throw in the American Way or would that piss to many people off.

I liked it for the most part, I think the character development took a little too long, but to somebody seeing Superman for the first time it was necessary.

There's no way they could use his, since Smith's script was an origin story and it would be silly to have Superman return then be reborn

^ i didn't know that. Just knew that he had written a script. There's no reason it couldn't have been an origin story though. I doubt it was called Superman Returns before they decided on a script.

ahhh i think I got what you were saying. That's why I said screenplay. I ment i would like to see what it was about (as in read it or get a synopsis), not see it actually made into a film. Altough, if it was good, i really wouldn't give a fuck whether or not they just did superman returns. Prequels get made all the time, as do entirely different approaches. I don't think they would do it in this situatin necessarily, but would you really care as long as it was well written and entertaining?

didnt the Smith screenplay have Brainiac and Doomsday? I remember on the Evening with Kevin Smith dvd Kevin talks about it -and the producers wanted him to add a scene where Superman fights polar bears at the Fortress and fights a giant Spider at the end. After Smith rejected to make the changes and the Tim Burton was hired and rejected the Smith script, the same producer John Peters (the guy who produced Superman 1 and Barabra Streisands former hair dresser) used the giant spider idea in Wild Wild West with Will Smith, one of the worst movies of all time.

Batman has kryptonite when it is appropriate to the story for Batman to have kryptonite.

if it doesn't make a profit in the theater they will get it out to video ASAP. They still have a chance of turning a profit. And if they do they'll make another sequel, just not with as much of a budget probably.

Why did he crash onto earth in the beginning? I don't recall it being explained. Was it a reference to something in the comics or anything? or was it just a means for a dramatic entrance? That kind of stuff comes from shitty writing.

maybe he didnt have a lot of energy when he got done at krypton, so he got that big ass rock going really fast in the right direction, then hopped in and let inertia do its thing

that might be all back of the bus and shit, but why drive when you can be driven

i'm pretty sure it was the ship he originally came to earth in.

i doubt he could fly to krypton in any reasonable amount of time.

i also liked this movie. i had my doubts about the new guy, but he pretty much nailed chris' reeves character. the ending dragged, but that just seemed to be setting up DRAMA for the next one. oh, and i had to piss like a motherfucker...

^^ i thought about that (him being away from our sun and all), but wouldn't the sun in Krypton's system give him energey as well, not to mention he landed right on his own farm. I mean that's a hell of a shot.

^ what makes you think it was a ship? Looked like a big ass rock to me (my first assumption was that it was part of the planet that exploded in the intro). I'm pretty sure in the comics he used to fly around the earth so fast it would spin backwards. It doesn't take much force to go fast in outer space. So I think he could get there and back, he was gone for 5 years.

^Even flying at the speed of light it would take like 40 years to get to the closest star (Proxima Centauri I think? Or Alpha Centauri). Also, Krypton's sun is a red sun, meaning he doesn't get powers from it. I'm pretty sure it exploded at the beginning of the film anyway.

I think over the longterm, Superman will break even and turn a profit.

If it turns a profit, a sequal will be made.

Pirates was NOT better then superman.

I think the ultimate weakness of the movie was the fact that Lex's plot just wasn't flashy enough for the audience. Its pretty epic, Superman essentially carved a new island out and threw it into space but it didn't have enough explosions and "ooohhhh shit" moments (ie: the dude shoots superman in the eyeball and supes is all like LOLNO).

The second flick, if there is one, would be more epic I think.

this is precisely right

people want tons of explosions and shit

movies have been getting more and more ridiculous to this end along with the demands of the consumer

This film was more story oriented, and I believe many people had expectations of a super-action flick.

Personally, I love the way Singer did this film. But I've stated this enough already in this thread.

however, the way they presented it made for good storytelling

[qoute]Even flying at the speed of light it would take like 40 years to get to the closest star[/quote]

good point, so if he didn't have a space ship, and can't travel 16 x's the speed of light then that is a hole in the story.

The writting in this was not as good as it could/should have been. There was no tension between lex and superman, the lifting of the island didn't seem nearly as dramatic as it should have (different camera angles or music could have done the trick perhaps).

Also when he took Lois up to look down at the earth, she would have gotten Altitude sickness if she could breathe at all. The end dragged on and could have ended 3 different times. This little shit adds up and makes me like the movie less, mostly because of what it could have been. I'll go ahead and say that if it wasn't for the quality of a few of the action scenes that this movie is a piece of shit. (i'm gonna reserve the right to take that back after seeing it again and giving it more thought though)

as much as i liked this one, i hope in the next one they have an epic villian that he can physically fight

like a darkseid or a doomsday, maybe a parasite or a metallo

smallville is already doing the brainiac thing and toyman doesn't really suit a movie

and they sure as fuck need to stay away from some bizarros
