More details:

Quote :
"Curran said the brothers were among several partygoers who went to bed when authorities first gave the group a warning, and when authorities returned to kick the entire party out of the resort, they first had to wake the Staals up.

"What is unfortunate is at the end, the entire group was asked to leave the hotel, including Eric and Jordan and some of the others that had gone to bed when the first warnings came in," Curran said. "They were asked to go to bed, and they did. ... A couple of the kids kept going. That's what caused the continued disturbance.""

Because of course getting drunk and stupid and arrested for disturbing the peace at a bachelor party where no weapons or illegal substances were involved is just livin' up the thug life on a daily basis.

drinking alcohol when you're 18 isn't illegal? maybe i should've moved to minnesota from age 18-20

Act != substance

Pot = illegal
meth = illegal
coke = illegal

alcohol != illegal

That's like saying that cars are an illegal item, since you're not allowed to drive them without a license.

Two tidbits this afternoon:

The Staal arrest thing is getting wrapped up

Quote :
"PITTSBURGH (AP) -Carolina Hurricanes star Eric Staal and his brother Jordan Staal of the Pittsburgh Penguins have been offered plea deals stemming from their arrests at Eric Staal's bachelor party in Minnesota last month.

Paul Krepelka, the agent who represents both players, said the prosecutor in Cook County, Minn., offered to settle the case by having the Staals plead guilty to a petty misdemeanor for disorderly conduct. Charges of obstructing the legal process are to be dropped against both players, Krepelka said.

Ten of the 14 young men charged after complaints of screaming, yelling and loud music accepted the same deal Wednesday, Krepelka said. Two of them appeared in court; the others submitting written petitions to plead guilty, said Cook County Attorney Tim Scannell.

The Staals were to appear in court at a later date, in part because Eric Staal is still on his honeymoon, Krepelka said.

If they accept the deal, they will each be fined $587 for disorderly conduct. Jordan Staal, 18, will also pay a $150 fine for underage drinking, Krepelka said."

The Versus TV schedule is out, and the Canes have 5 appearances (I want to say they had 2 last year).

As we count down the days until the opening of training camps, I've decided to play a fun game of "Better or Worse?" In the coming weeks, I'll look at each team (in alphabetical order) and give you my opinion about whether it will be better or worse in the coming season based on what it has done in the offseason. This isn't meant to be a complete preview. I'll leave that for the fall.

Carolina Hurricanes (40-34-8): Better

After the Stanley Cup win in 2006, the Hurricanes' title defense never picked up much steam. A combination of injuries and individual underachievement left Carolina on the outside of the playoff chase.

Longtime GM Jim Rutherford figured his roster didn't need a major face-lift, and I can't really argue with that thinking. The Hurricanes should be (first and foremost) healthy, rested and hungry when they open training camp next month.

Rutherford didn't stand totally pat, though. He made an interesting move by reacquiring forward Matt Cullen, whose versatility was an important part of the Hurricanes' championship run in 2005-06. That offseason, Cullen signed a free-agent deal with the Rangers, who didn't really know how to use him.

Cullen became expendable in New York after the big-market team signed top free-agent centers Scott Gomez and Chris Drury. Because of the situation, Rutherford didn't have to give up too much (defenseman Andrew Hutchinson, forward Joe Barnes and a third-round pick in 2008) to put Cullen back in a Hurricanes sweater.

Carolina also signed free-agent center Jeff Hamilton, who put up 18 goals and 21 assists in his first full NHL season with Chicago. Coach Peter Laviolette probably has a little knowledge of Hamilton thanks to their time spent together in the Islanders organization earlier in the decade.

Rutherford also added goalie Michael Leighton to challenge John Grahame for the No. 2 job behind starter Cam Ward, who signed a new three-year contract in May. Leighton played just five NHL games last season in Nashville and Philadelphia, but he spent at least a few minutes with the Chicago Blackhawks earlier in his career (2002-04).

I believe the Hurricanes were victims of a lot of bad circumstances last season. I expect they'll be better and more consistent in 2007-08 and should find their way back to the playoffs. But I don't see another Cup in their immediate future.

I'm not so sure about Leighton challenging John Grahame. He could hardly challenge Robert Esche.

Granted, he's still young, and Justin Peters went on a huge skid late last season that will put Leighton in at a solid #3, but I really don't think Grahame is going to have to worry about giving up more than a couple of his 18-20 starts.
