Delhomme hasn't blown a game...to me that's a great season for him. When we were great teams he was a good game manager, didn't make great plays, but didn't blow it either. I think that's key for him and we'll be successful...pending our DLine steps up the play

I said nothing of the sort.
Regardless, that still doesn't mean he's a consistent player. It means he's managed to not fuck up royally here in the first three games. While that's nice, we've got a long way to go before this is verifiably a great season for Delhomme. I'll be more than happy if it ends up being one, but I'm not holding my breath.

^^ Yep, that's obviously all I know about football. I've never seen Jake Delhomme blow a game in his life, and of course I don't know nearly enough to be able to evaluate him based on his own merit.
Look at his ratings in the past four seasons: they're in the 80-90 range, not the ~110 we've seen in the last few games here. Is it really so unreasonable to think that he may, at some point in the season, play like we've seen him play before? It doesn't matter that much since we still managed to get to the Superbowl in that period, but we relied really heavily on our defense. Right now, our defense needs some work, and Delhomme's possible turnovers could easily lose us games.
So excuse me for having some reservations about the guy. I will never have been happier to be wrong about anything in my life if he keeps it up. Maybe it wouldn't bother me as much if our defense got their act together. 9/25/2007 1:00:25 PM |

everybody knows Delhomme isnt Brady or Manning...so what are you suggesting? you're just saying you're still not completely sold on Jake...thats fine...also you will never ever be completely sold on him unless he wins a Superbowl...he is a top 5 QB in the NFL right now strictly based on the first 3 weeks of the season and those stats...but those arent good enough! 9/25/2007 1:17:45 PM |

The first three games of a season are supposed to tell me something about how his stats are going to look at the end of December? Come on now, be reasonable. I didn't say he couldn't be good: he is right now, that's true. Whether he'll continue to be is another matter completely. I never said I wouldn't be sold on him unless he wins a Superbowl. If he can somehow manage to keep up what he's been doing recently during the whole season, I'll be happy with him.
Stop trying to argue with me, you're getting nowhere.

Peppers and Jenkins are playing like they are suddenly 5 years older. Our LBs have been very disappointing, and our secondary isn't good enough to shut down NFL corners/receivers without more out of the guys up front.

more than just our defense as a whole, I'm really disappointed in Julius Peppers.
All I saw from him last week was weak play and a batted down pass. Where is the Peppers we all know? Where is the guy that chased Vick down from behind? Where is that dominant presence that he used to bring?

Found this today too
Quote : | "IN MY OPINION: Peppers must make presence felt, Panthers defensive end must change TOM SORENSEN
Julius Peppers is a great athlete. He is not a great football player.
Because he is 6-foot-7 and 283 pounds, runs like a tailback and carries the body fat of a receiver, we might expect too much.
Peppers' agent is attempting to negotiate a new contract with Carolina. Perhaps he'll expect too much from the Panthers.
Watching Julius against Atlanta on Sunday was like sitting in a meeting full of co-workers who had nothing to say but talked anyway. It was exhausting.
Here comes Peppers unleashing his best "So You Think You Can Dance" moves on Falcons tackle Todd Weiner.
There goes the play, away from Julius, around or through him.
Peppers had as much impact as a ball boy. He had as many highlights as a Carolina kick returner. He had as many tackles as I did.
In three games, Peppers has six tackles, four of which came during the opener. The NFL tracks such things and has Julius in a 37-way tie for 356th place. Among the players with whom he is tied are teammates Kris Jenkins (so far Carolina's best defensive lineman), Maake Kemoeatu, Kindal Moorehead and Marquand Manuel.
Other notable names in the group are Fred Smoot and Johnny Jolly. Smoot is notable because this proves he is still in the league. Jolly is notable because if you're tied for 356th, you should think about changing your name.
I think I saw Peppers bull-rush Weiner and knock him into the quarterback, but he was more likely to drop into coverage to pick up a receiver. Step right up and see the world's tallest cornerback.
I know Peppers' athleticism enables him to do things others can't. I don't recall Indianapolis defensive end Dwight Freeney covering a guy going out for a pass. I don't know if he could.
I do recall Freeney going after the quarterback. Could be a day game, could be a night game. Could be a Sunday, could be a Monday. Could be matched against one blocker, could be matched against three. If you're the quarterback, Dwight Freeney is coming.
When Peppers commits to the rush, he can be better than Freeney. Against Minnesota last September, he played the greatest game I have seen a Panthers defender play.
He had three sacks, blocked a field-goal attempt and regularly zig-zagged across the dirty fake grass to bring down the man with the ball. In October, he was named the league's defensive player of the month.
But as the season went on, he wore down, apparently a victim of too many double-teams. He has not been heard from since.
Fans need to hear his name Sunday. Without a rush, Tampa Bay quarterback Jeff Garcia, the free-agent acquisition of the offseason and a beautiful fit for Jon Gruden's offense, will cut up the home team.
The easy thing to say is that Peppers isn't trying. We always say that when a great athlete slumps. I don't know if it's that simple.
I know only that the rigors of NFL line play are such that everybody gets to take a few plays off. But nobody gets to take off September." |

pepps is a no show, but Jenkins and some of the back-ups are doing ok. LB's have been good in stopping the run game, but terrible in short over the middle routes (which have been killing us the past two games), and our safeties have shown good run support, and have caused multiple fumbles....but you're right about them being bad in coverage. Also, our run game is showing signs of life, and the pass game isn't bad.
Two things really bother me:
our coaching - see below (fox is almost too level headed and it trickles down to the rest of the team). we quit in the houston game (throwing passes to the middle of the field, down by 2 scores, 5 min to go, and no timeouts). and our conservative D play.
and
the team's overall attitude and lack of fire (smitty and jake are the only ones who act like they care to be out there).9/25/2007 3:54:56 PM |

Quote : | " Delhomme (elbow injury) sits out practice Associated Press, Updated 30 minutes ago
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme's strained right elbow forced him to miss practice Wednesday, leaving his status uncertain for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.
Linebacker Dan Morgan (ankle) and guard Jeremy Bridges (toe) also sat out the workout.
Delhomme was injured when he was sacked by John Abraham late in the third quarter of Sunday's win over Atlanta. He played into the next series, when he winced in pain after throwing a short pass to Brad Hoover.
David Carr took over and led Carolina on two scoring drives to snap a tie. Carr, who was 3-of-4 for 56 yards, would start against the Buccaneers if Delhomme can't go.
An MRI on Monday showed no structural damage to Delhomme's elbow. But he did not dress for practice Wednesday and left during the workout to get treatment.
Delhomme said he still hopes to play Sunday.
"I haven't grabbed a ball and tried to throw it. That's when I can really tell you," Delhomme said. "I don't want to do that yet. I want to let things calm down.
"I did watch film yesterday, so it wasn't like I've already thrown in the towel."
Coach John Fox would not provide any further information on Delhomme's injury.
Morgan left the Falcons game in the first half with what was called a shoulder injury. After returning, he went out again with a leg injury and it was announced Monday he's suffering from tendinitis.
Bridges was one of three linemen with toe injuries. Defensive end Mike Rucker and tackle Travelle Wharton were limited in practice. Wharton said he was sure he would play against the Bucs.
Also Wednesday, the Panthers signed quarterback Quinton Porter to the practice squad and released running back Alex Haynes. " |
Looks like we might get to see what Carr can do for a full game. My only concern is that the bucs aren't the same pushover that they've been for the past 4 years.9/26/2007 10:35:02 PM |

Associated Press
Updated: September 27, 2007, 1:19 PM ET
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Jake Delhomme missed practice again Thursday with a strained right elbow, making it more likely backup David Carr will start at quarterback for Carolina on Sunday against Tampa Bay.
Panthers coach John Fox, always secretive with injuries, sidestepped a question on whether Delhomme tried to throw.
"He did not participate [in practice]," Fox said. "That's all .. I've got to say and that's all I'm going to say. You know that."
Carr, signed by Carolina in the offseason after being a five-year starter in Houston, led Carolina on two scoring drives in relief against Atlanta after Delhomme left the game late in the third quarter.
Linebackers Dan Morgan (ankle) and Adam Seward (calf) and guard Jeremy Bridges (toe) also missed practice for a second straight day.
Tackle Travelle Wharton and defensive end Mike Rucker returned to practice after being limited in Wednesday's workout with toe injuries. " |

It's odd, because before the year began many people looked at last season and thought that Carr might get the nod over Delhomme for the starting spot.
But, looking at this season, I find myself much more worried about the Bucs game with Carr up for the start instead of Delhomme.
Either way, though, I agree that the defense HAS to do something if we're going to beat Tampa. ZERO interceptions in the first three games??? That's fucking pathetic, especially for corners that are supposed to be as good as Lucas and Gamble are supposed to be. 9/27/2007 4:10:45 PM |

Yeah I'm not so much worried about Carr as I am about our defense, but I'm hoping Jenkins' "speech" will get them fired up...Carr is serviceable...I certainly feel a lot more comfortable with him starting than Chris "1-17 Record As A Starter" Weinke...we need our O-Line to do a good job for him and the running game, and for somebody who is not #89 to catch a few passes...but our defense is key 9/27/2007 4:14:39 PM |

I think the problem with our d-line is it's too good (or at least that's the prevailing opinion around the league, and more importantly, our coaches as well). If our line was average, we would be running stunts, blitzing LBs and safeties and doing everything we could to get pressure on the QB and mix things up. But because everyone thinks our d-line is godlike, we just leave them alone to do their own thing every single play. The result? the same 4 guys rushing from the same 4 positions using the same moves on every drive and getting tired since they have no support and are facing max protection constantly, and by the second half, even a high school team can figure out how to beat a pass rush like that (see: our recent history of second half collapses). We have the talent to get the job done, but the coaches would definitely be well served to watch some game film of the Patriots defense in action and take some notes. They keep an offense off balance like no other. 9/27/2007 6:47:48 PM |

i dont exactly agree that we're too good...i think we've been living off reputation and name the past couple years based on when we HAD to have great defense a few years back when that was winning us games...I do agree however that we trust the front 4 too much to get pressure...we do need to vary things up a bit
