so the ACC and Big East are better than the Big 10?? REALLY?

Also, to the post about the turnovers being caused by LSU's speed/athleticism: the fumble was good pressure on Boeckman, the 1st INT was an underthrown ball on good coverage and the 2nd was miscommunication btw the QB and WR.

And I haven't forgotten about TSUN losing to App State, it's one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

the big east is easily better than the big 10

the acc is def better as well, just compare the conferences best teams to one another and think about who would win the matchups

THE overrated state university

i didn't watch this game cause i really didn't care. but i was glad to check it out on msn homepage a few minutes ago and see that osu got spanked...again.

i figured this would settle all arguments about who has the better football conference, but i suppose not. i agree that a LSU and USC matchup would have been better.

The INT was underthrown because Beochman(however you spell it) was under pressure and got completly blown up. Thats why the ball was underthrown. And good coverage is a result of being athletic.

And the reference to every conference being light years ahead of the Big 10 was in terms of strategy, and the style of football played. I never said those conferences were better, there is a major difference. The big 10 still has better athletes then the big east and ACC, however, it is getting nuetralized by the style of play and that is really hurting the big 10 overall.

how are they easily better? They have WV, who's a top-notch team, but other than that, who do they have?

^Boeckman has been underthrowing the deep ball all year, so I wasn't the least bit surprised he did it last night.

Wisconsin is better than anyone not named WV in the Big East. Illinois is a good team (not great or elite, I know better than that. But they're good). Penn State is in the same category as Illinois, except they're on the decline whereas Illinois is on the rise.

Nothing Wisconsin did this year tells me anything about them. Until Big 10 teams start to play some OOC teams, I'm going to assume they aren't better. Wisconsins OOC schedule was :
Wash st., UNLV, Citadel, N. Ill, then they lost to Tennesse in the bowl.

Look they might be a good team, but how the fuck do we know? Our only thing to compare them to is their own conference. Give me the notable OOC wins by the Big 10 and maybe I'll change my mind. But you can't build up the strength of a conference just on them beating themselves.

there really weren't any big OOC games by the big10 this year. ND is usually good, which helps MSU, Purdue and Mich, but that clearly wasn't the case this year. OSU typically has a stronger OOC schedule, but Washington wasn't the team they were when the game was scheduled. Even that game aside, it would have been weak with YSU, Kent State and Akron being on it. However, those games are there to keep $$ in Ohio.

The last 2 years, OSU played in the biggest OOC games of the regular season vs. Texas and people applauded them for it. This year was an off year for OOC scheduling, but the next 2 years they play USC, so there's 1 big time game anyway.

Just because 1 team plays 1 OOC game thats tough doesn't vindicate the entire conference. Top to bottom, the big 10 is always weak OOC.

I'm just saying, you can't argue for your conference if there is no point of comparison. I am not going to assume the big 10 is good just by watching them play each other.

Here is a good stat for you, 6 of the 11 big 10 teams had 0-1 players taken in last year's draft. I'm not sure what that proves, I just like that.

Thought it was a great one, def not taking credit for it.

When you are use to being on top of the world it is hard to realize when people have caught up and passed you. They'll get some fresh coaches in and it will cycle around and the conference will get back on track eventually.

As Jay Davis proved with NCSU the only real stats that matter is the score on the board. He would have 300+ yards and even a few TD's. however, when you throw 5 interceptions or drive 80 yards and throw a int on the 12yr line it all goes down the tubes.

a 3 point game you can maybe put on turnovers or a blown call, but a two touchdown loss cannot be justified.

Conferences aren't determined by who their best 2 or 3 teams are. Minnesota, Northwestern, Iowa, Indiana and Michigan State were all below average teams this year. The Big East had Syracuse to drag the conference down but not much else (you can argue Pittsburgh but they had a tough schedule). From top to bottom, I don't think the Big 10 has an argument this year about being anything but the worst BCS conference...

btw, how the hell did Indiana get a bowl game! They didn't play a single team that was ranked at the time the ENTIRE YEAR! That is nearly impossible in any BCS conference.

Yeah but Indiana was a good story this year, I know that isn't justification neccisarily for a bowl game, but it is one of the nice stories that came out of the bowl season. The program and fans needed it.

^thats why I also mentioned that Ill and PSU are good teams. The Big Ten has 2 (traditionally) elite teams, and then PSU and UW are normally good for top 25, along with a rotating team or 2 in the top 25. The rotating 1 has invloved everyone but Indiana and NW for most of eternity. Now Minnesota is ruling the shitter.

I think if OSU happens to make it next again next year, they should allow the opponent to score in the first 3 minutes, as thats clearly a harbinger for a loss.

In 2004 with Jay Davis starting the first year after Rivers left we outgained every opponent but one and went 5-6. OMG WE ARE THE BEST WE SHOULD HAVE WENT 10-1 BUT IT WAS BULLSHIT TURNOVERS! Last time I checked turnovers were a huge part of football.

iirc LSU was +19 going into the game and Ohio State was like -1 in turnover margin

ie LSU had forced 19 more turnovers than they had lost, and Ohio State forced about the same number as they lost

And some people (myself included) prefer the old school style. That's why the Rich Rod hire is bittersweet for me...a chance to start winning again, but we also lose the status of being one of the nation's last bastions of the classic game - we'll be just like everyone else.

Yes, there's nothing like refusing to adapt to changes in the game to keep you relevant. Just ask Nebraska how well the option worked for them once they started playing the more evolved, fast, FSU/Miami style defense that everyone now runs. If you don't adapt you die. Teams that are too proud to change inevitably go to shit and then they finally realize that tradition doesn't win titles, talent and coaching do. That's why USC is back in the picture and FSU is currently struggling.

If OSU, Michigan, Wisconsin, PSU, etc. refuse to evolve you'll see Illinois in the BCS title game soon.

The style of football even goes as far as the type of athletes that they are recruiting, it isn't just play calling.

Here is the problem with it, when you do smash mouth football and get the lead, your golden. Problem is your fucked when your behind by a significant amount. 4th quarter down by 14 and tOSU is still freakin' running the ball on first down. It is what they do. In the Big 10, it is a lot of old school football vs. old school football, and the defenses are built to stop that. Then a high paced spread offense comes along, torches the defense, and the old school offense is left down by 21 trying to get back in the game.

Get over yourself and your conference. Thats the lamest one I've heard yet. Like the Big 10 is some beacon of hope in this great shitstorm that is the current game of football. There isn't a conference in the country I'd rather watch less than the Big 10, BCS or Mid-Major.

It's a matter of an old school coach not understanding that the rules of the game and the increasing skills of athletes favors offense much more than defense.

"Another Buckeye bust
By Jason King, Yahoo! Sports
January 8, 2008

Jason King
Yahoo! Sports

NEW ORLEANS – As they hurried toward the Superdome tunnel following Monday's 38-24 loss to LSU, Ohio State's players jogged past a trio of policemen on horseback.

Fittingly, one of them stepped in a patch of manure.

For the second straight year, the Buckeyes played for the national title. For the second straight year, the game stunk.

"Man," right tackle Kirk Barton said. "This sucks."

Indeed, Monday's beatdown hatcheted straight through the core of Ohio State's program and the Big Ten conference.

Both carried iffy reputations into the BCS championship – the Buckeyes because of their lack of wins against high-quality opponents, the Big Ten because of its 5-10 record in bowl games the past two seasons.

After Monday, the naysayers will only increase. Instead of clearing the stench that lingered from last year's 41-14 loss to Florida, the Buckeyes were beaten badly again, this time by an LSU squad that clearly outclassed Ohio State at almost every position.

"I wish I could put our fans all in one room and apologize to them," receiver Brian Hartline said.

The Buckeyes, 11-2, certainly have some explaining to do.

A 65-yard touchdown run by Beanie Wells gave Ohio State a 7-0 first quarter lead, and it was 10-0 after a field goal that was set up by Todd Boeckman's 44-yard pass to Brandon Saine.

Other than those two plays, Ohio State's offense was basically inept against Bo Pelini's LSU defense. The Buckeyes' two other scores came on a short drive that was set up by an interception, and a meaningless touchdown that came with them trailing 38-17 in the game's waning minutes.

"It hurts tremendously," Wells said. "I mean, the pain … you really can't compare it to anything. To go to the national championship twice and lose … it's incredible."

Even more frustrating is that Ohio State had five, 15-yard personal foul penalties, including one on a roughing-the-kicker call in the third quarter. That blunder kept alive an LSU drive that ended with a Jacob Hester touchdown that made it 31-10.

The Buckeyes never had a chance after that.

"God gave us another great opportunity tonight," defensive tackle Doug Worthington said. "Once again, we couldn't capitalize."

As the final minutes ticked away, hordes of photographers surrounded the Ohio State sideline to capture shots of the Buckeyes in a state of despair. Former players such as Santonio Holmes and Will Smith tried to provide solace to their former teammates before heading toward the exit with about two minutes left on the clock.

Instead of sticking around for postgame handshakes, most players darted straight toward the locker room as time expired. Some, like lineman Alex Barrow, hung their head and cried. Others cursed at no one in particular.

"We've always tried to let criticism motivate us," left tackle Alex Boone said. "I can't (imagine) what people are going to be saying about us now."

As many barbs as will thrown toward Ohio State for getting blown out for the second straight year, plenty of criticism will be surely be levied once again at the BCS system that allowed them to play in the game in the first place.

Even though they finished the regular season with just one loss, the Buckeyes' schedule was hardly as strong as the one played by two-loss schools such as USC, Georgia and West Virginia – all of whom felt they should've been in Monday's championship instead of Ohio State.

"I don't worry too much about criticism," coach Jim Tressel said. "If you're not tough enough to handle criticism, then you better get out of this game, because there's a whole lot of people that have interest in this game.

"And there are a whole lot of people that don't really have an understanding of what it takes to be good at this game, but yet love to have opinions."

True – and this may sound far-fetched – but one popular opinion is that it's tough to win when you throw two interceptions, lose a fumble and allow your opponent to convert on eight of its first nine third down opportunities. That's exactly what Tressel's squad did Monday.

Still, as poorly as they played, the Buckeyes can take solace in two things, one of which is that they continued to exhibit grit when the game was all but lost.

"I'm proud of the way we fought," Barton said. "We didn't quit like some said we did last year. Last year we went into the tank a little bit, and (Florida) really took it to us."

The other positive is that Ohio State started just two seniors on offense and only one on defense Monday. Some players, such as junior linebacker James Laurinaitis, are considering entering the NFL draft.

Even if a few Buckeyes leave early, Ohio State will almost certainly enter the 2008 season ranked in the top five, and they're also in the running for quarterback Terrelle Pryor, the country's top-ranked high school senior.

"A lot of guys may shock the world and stay," Worthington said. "We'll be back next season, competing for the national title once again."

In the meantime the Buckeyes won't have much use for the present Tressel gave each of his players for Christmas: a DVD containing clips of national college football pundits saying the Buckeyes didn't belong in the national title game.

Turns out, they were right. "

I like how all of you guys are fucking football coaches now. LSU was the better team, that's pretty much it. Not to mention OSU had a fucking month and half lay-off. You guys are making it seem like they're the worst program to every grace the field. LSU would've beaten most anyone in the nation aside from possibly georgia and USC. That said, OSU went 11-1 in a BCS conference, so until they change the playoff format, quit crying. They deserved to be there.

well,

1. If Ohio State would have lost and just had a month off, you would have claimed "ohhh LSU had more time to rest and heal up, that wasnt fair, Ohio State was rushed" so thats just bullshit

2. Its their damn fault for being little bitches and not having a conference championship game
