I was really disappointed in this movie.


I'll admit, i'd never heard of the watchmen before the film release, but i felt like the movie was just too disjointed. I mean you had all this shit going on in parallel to all this random history of the characters, and retarded action/porn scenes that just seemed out of place.

It was certainly a different kind of comic book movie, but by the end, I was glad I had never read the comics.

I don't think it was the worst movie ever, but certainly my least favorite comic book movie. (Yes, that includes the Hulk, Punisher, and even Ghost Rider.)

Yeah, there's no crystallization of theme in the movie like there is in the book. In the book, you can feel all of the characters and their backstories working towards something (I suppose "I DID IT!" is as good as anything), and when you get there, lots of other things make sense. This is especially evident when you go back and read multiple times, because you see that the clues were there all along in the intricacies of the panels. That's something that may never exist in a movie, and certainly doesn't in this one.

Only comic ever to win a Hugo award too. I hope you know groundbeef that they condensed a novel thats actually worth six 3hour episodes into one movie. I haven't seen this movie yet but its obvious that it can be no more than a campy tribute to fans who have read the comic and know whats going down by heart. They're are so many great tidbits like the black frigate and rorshachs prison lunch scene that this movie most likely didn't even touch. The only thing I can attribute your experience too would be if you started watching Star Wars ep IV without ever even hearing about the first 3 movies.

And this is coming from someone who seldom reads anything if its more than a couple pages. Let me just say, the comic is remarkable and Alan Moore the writer is both a weird dude and a genius.

Re the comic, haven't seen the movie. So how is the threat of alien attack going to secure lasting peace? You'd think that it would only set it back a bit or slow the progress of 'mutual destruction'. Give people a generation... or less, they'll forget and be right back where they started.

I heard they got rid of the squid in the movie. Can't imagine what they used in its place.

I think the ending with rorshach's journal showing up on the journalist's desk kinda alludes to that in a certain way. In the end theres always gonna be a new conflict and that even with the help of a divine being (dr. manhatten) the world is imperfect and some flawed bullshit will always arise. Thats the genius of Moore, he left the story at a loose end and thats what made it so compelling. You also have to consider the times this story was made, which was post climactic cold war.

Really it was Manhattan's fault that things got as bad as they did. After he (literally) single handily ended the Vietnam War, he was seen as such a threat by the Russians that they felt the need to stockpile more and more weapons and keep their forces constantly on alert at the borders, to which the fictional version of Nixon responded to similarly.

Its like the Comedian said, the US would go crazy if they lost that war. Instead, it only got worse.

All this discussion is making me want to hit up a guy I know for the paperback copy he let me borrow a while ago. To me the whole watchman chronicle is like one of those pop-up books with the movable tabs and such you used to read as a kid, so enjoyable and engrossing you could mess with it for hours. I'd probably give this movie a chance just to see some of the scenes come alive. Like when the comedian gets his eye slashed or when ozzy catches the bullet, things like that would be cool. However I dont expect near the amount of satisfaction one would get from reading the novel. Its one of those type of things at the end where the only thing that can come out of your mouth is like "fuck." Thats how I would describe it.

went and saw it tonight having never read it and I really enjoyed it. There were certainly parts of the movie that felt disjointed but overall it had a very unique feel to it and kept me engaged the entire time. I didnt really feel like it was a "superhero" movie, but even classifying it as such, it was worlds better than most superhero movies I have seen lately.

The book was written in a parallel/symmetrical format where every other chapter alternates between plot and backstory. Each character had their own history chapter (Rorschach with the psychiatrist, Manhattan on Mars, Comedian at his own funeral, etc).

The russians feared the U.S. would start a nuclear war with Dr Manhattan's help. Then, one day, Dr Manhattan visibly obliterates Moscow. And, odd as it sounds, The Soviet Union's first response is not to launch missiles in hope of revenge, but to instead check western television to find out that Dr Manhattan has also devastated New York and a bunch other cities. Do I have this right?

I am affraid that an alien invasion is a bit more believable, since only then could the Russian's not blame America and Dr Manhattan.

i will say, rorschach was damn near perfect, in mask and out of mask

silk spectre 1 and 2 were just horrible though

comedian was good for the 11 minutes he was in it

dr manhattan is a tossup for me, they did not do nearly enough to convince me that "THE COMEDIAN IS MY FATHER" scene was enough to flip the care-switch
but that goes back to the whole "comedian was not in it enough"

and night owl was ok as dan, but was painful in costume

don't even get me started on what they did to ozymandias

the movie gets about a 3.5/10 from Woodfoot

Ok so I saw this movie today, here are my thoughts:

It was mediocre at best, I would give it 2.5 maybe 3 stars out of 5. I'm sure the graphic novel is MUCH better (I've never read it, but I might). The movie just seemed like it was trying too hard to be like graphic novel, which IMHO is simply impossible, no movie adaptation can ever be as good as reading the book.

on another note, I find it incredibly fucked up that people can watch shit like a little girl's remains being eaten by dogs, or a guy's skull getting split with a cleaver, but freak out at the sight of a flaccid penis

I really wish the "nothing ever ends" line had stayed as DrM talking to Ozzy, instead of Laurie being all "I know what John would say..." It was a much stronger line the way it was written in the novel.

If I was Dan and Laurie kept bringing up what John would do and what John would say, I'd slap the bitch and leave.

I just don't know what people expect from movies. Do you want them to give you a blowjob?

I thought this movie was a ton of fun and intellectually stimulating enough for $7. Dr. Manhattan was cool, the Nixon President For Life stuff was cool (the alt-history was one of my favorite things about the story), and Rorschach was just scary and acted amazingly.

Excited to read the book now, and maybe the fact that I haven't is why I liked the movie so much, but... it was good.
