Ok I know you are like from Miami or something, but you can't honestly believe they'll be the best in the ACC with the Heels bringing back pretty much everyone. So I'm guessing you picked Miami just to spark some debate. Same goes with that Illinois pick
ACC - UNC Big East - UConn Big Ten - Purdue (it was either them or Michigan State but I think the Spartans will miss the leadership of Neitzel) Big 12 - Kansas (I know they lose a fair amount but it's just hard to pick against KU based on history) Pac 10 - UCLA SEC - Kentucky
Mid-major conferences: C-USA - Memphis SoCon - Davidson A-10 - St. Joe's CAA - George Mason Horizon - Butler MAC - Kent State MVC - Creighton MWC - BYU Sun Belt - South Alabama WCC - Gonzaga WAC - Nevada (the conference tournament is being played at their home court)
Other conferences: Ivy League - Penn OVC - Austin Peay Summit League - Oral Roberts (it's hard to choose against the three time defending conference champs) Southland - Northwestern State MAAC - Siena Big West - Pacific America East - Vermont (I kind of wanted to choose Albany here though) Big Sky - Weber State (they're like the UNC of the Big Sky conference) Northeast - Robert Morris MEAC - Delaware State Patriot - Bucknell Atlantic Sun - Belmont (3 time defending champs, so I'm not picking against them to win it again) SWAC - Jackson State 8/12/2008 5:04:56 PM |

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State rising senior Ben McCauley has spent the summer on the golf course.
No, he’s not living a relaxed lifestyle. He’s been working in the cart shed at a local country club, trying to gain a little insight into the golf industry while also working out with his teammates in preparation for the upcoming basketball season.
McCauley sat down with GoPack.com’s Tim Peeler to talk about what’s going on with the men’s basketball program.
GoPack.com: So what have you been doing this summer?
McCauley: I’ve been working at Brier Creek Country Club, learning a little about the golf industry. I get out there early and move carts and put out bags, that kind of stuff. I've talked a lot to the pro and the assistant pros, and one thing I have learned is that if you like to play golf, don't get into the golf business, because their is not enough time for it. That kind of worries me a little bit. I have also learned that there are an awful lot of coaches in the world.
GoPack.com: What are you hearing from people that you talk to?
McCauley: Obviously, expectations for the team this coming season are down a little bit because we lost some good players and we had a difficult end to last year. But I think those low expectations will be good for us. We played well my sophomore year when no one expected us to do anything. The guys are working hard this summer. I think they all realize that we have a great opportunity this year, because we can surprise some people. A lot of the younger guys have some experience now. We have a strong older corps, with myself, Courtney Fells and Brandon Costner. Even Trevor Ferguson and Dennis Horner, they are going to be juniors now, so we have a strong core.
GoPack.com: You don’t have Engin Atsur from that team two years ago or Gavin Grant, but there is still a pretty big core of guys who remember what you did that season and in the ACC Tournament.
McCauley: Yeah, we all realize what it is like to be the underdogs and to go out there with nothing left to lose, really. I think we need to transfer that down to the younger guys and tell them that ‘No one is really giving us much of a shot, but don’t listen to anyone else. Play the game and play the way you know how to play.’ That’s what we did two years ago. If we do that this year, we have a really good opportunity to do some great things. We have the personnel. We have a lot of guys coming back. The year we did that my sophomore year, we only had six or seven players. This year we have more bodies.
GoPack.com: What about you personally? What are you looking for?
McCauley: This really is a comeback year for me. If I can get back to where I was my sophomore year, and maybe a little better, that would be great for me personally and for the team.
GoPack: What has your workout regimen been during the summer?
McCauley: I have been here in Raleigh all summer, getting my body right. I have lost 10 to 12 pounds. Last year, I started the season a little heavy. So now I feel good. I had an ankle problem from something that happened in the Clemson game, but it is 100 percent now. I am really looking forward to the season.
GoPack.com: What do you think happened last year?
McCauley: There are two things, besides the chemistry and the style of play, which was significantly different, that not a lot of people talked about. One was not having Engin Atsur back at the point and then losing Farnold Degand. We were doing well at the beginning of the year with Farnold. We won the Old Spice. We went on a little winning streak for a little bit. We beat Davidson at home, which turned out to be a really good win. When he went down, we had a freshman in Javi Gonzalez and essentially a freshman in Marques Johnson. That is one thing that was overlooked a lot, because everyone was concentrating on everyone not getting along or not playing the right way. That may have been the case sometimes, but we also had some bad luck with injuries and that had some impact on how we played.
GoPack.com: How is Farnold’s recovery coming along?
McCauley: Farnold is lifting, doing a little bit of running, which is good. He’ll be ready come practice time. He is itching to get back and playing. We are itching to have him back.
GoPack: Talk a little about the other guys on the team.
McCauley: The younger guys that are now moving up to be older guys, specifically Trevor and Dennis, are doing really well. Trevor got a lot of confidence at the end of the year. That has given him a lot of confidence. Dennis has shaped his body really well. He is getting in shape and working on his jump shot. Then, you the three of us who have been here three years: me, Brandon and Courtney. If the older guys can trickle down our work ethic and attitude down to the younger guys, I think we have a strong enough upper class that we can affect those younger guys in a positive way.
GoPack: Brandon didn’t play last year the way he played at the end of his freshman year. Which guy do you think we will see this year?
McCauley: Brandon is playing this summer the way he played in the ACC Tournament. He’s not completely there, but he is on his way. He has lost weight. He is in the gym, lifting, getting stronger. I can personally tell his attitude is different than last year. You can tell there is a little fire in his eyes. He wants to play well for his fellow teammates, specifically Courtney and me. He’s definitely on the right track.
GoPack.com: What thoughts are you taking into the start of school in a couple of weeks?
McCauley: The best thing I can say about last year is that it is over. There is nothing you can do about it. There were a few positives last year that we can take away from it. My main thought is that I want to get back to where I was two years ago. Team-wise, we have different personnel, but we also want to get back to the attitude we had then.
If we can get the guys here now playing like we did then, with the addition of more bodies, I think we can do a lot of good things. We have great leadership in the seniors. We have great guys on the team this year. They have a positive attitude. They want to redeem themselves. We kind of embarrassed ourselves in the way we played last year. I think if we can concentrate on those things and concentrate on what we can do, not what we did last year. We have to think about what we can do if we play the right way, play together and play hard. 8/13/2008 3:20:57 PM |

college hoops net recently posted their preview of us (they have us at #103 but had some positive things to say):
Quote : | "North Carolina State might as well just throw away the 2007-2008 season and move on. The Wolfpack lost their last nine games and the momentum is going way down for a team that had such high expectations heading into the campaign. But it is a new year and Coach Sidney Lowe has some talent to work with. Things could be just as bad as they were last season, but this is also a group that could put together a solid season and win 20 games." |

So I found something pretty interesting as I was reading through Chuck Taylor's Wikipedia page. He was an innovator and made a lot of contributions to the game of basketball. While working for Converse he started the basketball clinic and ran his first clinic at where else but North Carolina State University in 1922.

Don't forget about BC. They lose Shamari Spears to transfer (he transfered to UNC-Charlotte to be closer to a sick family member & I think the NCAA is allowing him to play right away as a result), as well as Oates and Blair to graduation. That's an awfully big blow to their frontcourt to lose those three players, especially since Oates and Blair were 6-10 and 6-11 respectively. They don't have anyone else on the roster close to that size. 8/19/2008 1:45:17 PM |

Tar Heels player pleads to underage drinking
North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson pleaded guilty today to a charge of driving after consuming alcohol under age.
Lawson had already completed 26 hours of community service, an alcohol assessment and a four-page report on the impact of drinking and driving as part of a plea agreement. Prosecutors dismissed a driving while license revoked charge and a noise ordinance violation.
"A lot of people could have been hurt from this, like my parents and my teammates," Lawson said after a short court appearance. "It won't happen again."
Chapel Hill police officer C. Shehan arrested Lawson, 20, at 2:33 a.m. on June 6 on North Columbia St., in the heart of town. The officer stopped Lawson, who was alone in a 2005 four-door Chevrolet with Maryland plates, after hearing loud music coming from the car.
Shehan suspected that Lawson had been drinking, conducted a field sobriety test and found probable cause to charge him with the misdemeanors, said Chapel Hill Police Capt. Chris Blue.
State law prohibits anyone under 21 from driving after drinking any amount of alcohol. Lawson turns 21 on Nov. 3. 8/19/2008 1:53:22 PM |

Davidson leads NIT Season Tip-Off field
Stephen Curry will lead Davidson against James Madison in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
The Wildcats are one of seven teams from last season's NCAA tournament in the field of 16, which was announced Tuesday by the NIT Selection Committee.
Purdue and Oklahoma both reached the second round of the NCAA last season while Cornell, Arizona, Mississippi Valley State and Georgia all lost first-round games.
Curry, a junior who averaged 25.9 points last season and is the nation's leading returning scorer, carried the Wildcats into a regional final there they lost to eventual NCAA champion Kansas. Davidson will play James Madison in the South Regional at Norman, Okla., while Oklahoma faces Mississippi Valley State.
Boston College will host the East Regional and will play Loyola, Md., while Cornell faces St. John's.
Purdue hosts the North Regional and will play Eastern Michigan. Georgia will play Loyola, Ill., in the region's other game.
Arizona hosts the West Regional and will play Florida Atlantic, while Santa Clara faces UAB.
The first-round games will be Nov. 17, with the regional championship and third-place games on Nov. 18.
The four winners advance to Madison Square Garden with the semifinals on Nov. 26 and the championship game on Nov. 28.
The other 12 teams will play two more rounds of games on Nov. 24 and 25, at campus sites.
The tournament started as the Preseason NIT in 1985. It is sponsored by Dick's Sporting Goods. 8/19/2008 1:56:08 PM |

Trevor Ferguson met with the media today. A link to the audio is on the page I posted.
http://northcarolinastate.scout.com/2/783343.html
Is this different for you now where you feel you really have a chance to show what you can do? I think so. The past couple of years, I really wasn't sure what my minutes were going to look like. I feel this year, hopefully I'll get the minutes.
I've been excited. I've been working hard all summer, just hoping to help this team win.
What was the team's reaction when you heard about this trip? We were very excited... just to be able to start early and get the freshmen used to our system. We're really working on trying to run a more uptempo style. We're trying to push the ball a lot more this year.
Has it been tough for coach Lowe to let go and let you guys push the ball more? Coach Lowe definitely wants to push the ball. When he first came in, maybe he didn't have the personnel to push the ball exactly. I think we have some players, moving Courtney [Fells] to three, we just have the ability... our point guards, when Farold gets back, he's doing great with his rehab and he'll be back soon.
With the way Ben and Brandon can run the floor, they should be able to get out and get the ball in the post early. That will make the defense collapse and open up everything on the perimeter.
How does this team improve defensively from last year? That's the thing we've worked on the most in these practices... our defensive principles. That's something we lacked last year. We would miss some assignments we were suppose to do last year.
From early on, he's really been stressing defensive principles, and it's something that is obviously going to help lead to an uptempo style.
Coach Lowe isn't fond of losing. Do you see a difference in him? Do you see him being more agressive? Absolutely. He's definitely come into this year with a positive attitude which has gone down to his staff and our players. Very excited to get out there and just play ball again.
Defensively you'll probably see some more traps, halfcourt, fullcourt schemes. I think the freshmen are doing so well that they'll be able to contribute and we'll be able to play more of an uptempo style.
Would you say Julius Mays is more suited for the point guard or shooting guard spot? I think he can play either position. As of now, since we're short on point guards, he's been playing point guard in practices. He's been doing a great job. I think he's capable of playing the two as well.
What does he do well? He's a very smart player. He doesn't turn it over much for a freshman, which is very good. In order to play for coach Lowe you can't turn the ball over. He can shoot it, and he's really good at getting inside. He's really nifty.
He's able to pass inside and create shots for himself.
What are your impressions of C.J. Williams? C.J. is a hard worker. He's a very smart player too. Both of them are very smart basketball players.
C.J. moves really well without the ball, and he's a very good defensive player. Everything else is going to fall into place.
Is their a chip on this team's shoulder after last season? We want to win games. Last year we wanted to win and this year we want to win. We just want to win games and I think we're all excited to get out there and start playing early... get some wins under the belt early.
What have you worked on this summer? Getting stronger. Last year I was a little weak... being able to chase people defensively on screens. Trying to get in better shape and continue to be able to shoot the ball. 8/26/2008 5:11:48 PM |

Today is a sad day for college basketball. Don Haskins died yesterday at the age of 78. Haskins is most known for coaching the 1966 Texas Western team that defeated Kentucky for the national championship. It was the first time a team had an all black starting 5 in a championship game. Kentucky didn't have one black player on its team. The legendary game took place at Maryland's Cole Fieldhouse. Texas Western would later become the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). The basketball program's arena is named after Haskins.
While I have a problem with how Disney portrayed the story in their film Glory Road, the movie did bring the story of that team back to the forefront.

Quote : | "The N.C. State men's basketball team ended the 2007-08 season on a nine game losing streak. Leading scorer and rebounder J.J. Hickson is now in the NBA after just one season, and the new season is just over a month away for the Wolfpack.
In a March interview Lee Fowler told The New 99.9 FM The Fan that he thought last season's team chemistry "seemed to be a bit 'squirrelly'" throughout the year.
"I think some kids were probably more interested in what themselves were doing and how much they were playing, so it's just been a battle through the year," said Fowler.
Head Coach Sidney Lowe joined The Fan's Mike Maniscalco and Dave Rothenberg Friday at the Varsity Club's golf outing at River Ridge Golf Course, and agreed with that assessment.
"You mean, were there guys that didn't want to accept their roles?" Lowe asked. "It's possible, it's possible."
Lowe, as he did throughout last season talked about his distaste for the word "chemistry" and also was very pleased with how his team bonded in their recent exhibition trip to Canada.'
"To me chemistry or lack of chemistry is when you have an individual or individuals who fail to accept their roles, so what we had there (Canada) was everybody accepting their role," Lowe said. " They knew what they were supposed to do, they didn't complain about it, and we had a good time."
Two players, Dennis Horner and Brandon Costner received recognition from Lowe for looking especially good in recent practices. Lowe used the word "unbelievable" to describe Horner's play recently.
ACC as a basketball conference:
Last season many critics said that the conference was down and wasn't as deep as it has been in past years. Lowe disagrees.
"It's amazing that they can say that," Lowe said. "This conference has always been tough. You look at the players, the teams, the guys going to the NBA and playing. It's (ACC) not down."
2008-09 Expectations:
Coach Lowe was asked about the expectations of this year's team and if he likes using the "us against the world" mentality.
"I love that, I love that, " Lowe said. "Its at the end when you show where you deserve to be so I like the fact that they don't expect anything from us this year, so let's have a little chip and go out there and play and prove some people wrong."
J.J. Hickson in the NBA:
Lowe believes Hickson will be very successful at the next level, and also takes exception to the notion that Hickson was a kink to the team's chemistry last season.
"He is a young man that was committed. When people talk about 'did J.J. mess up the team chemistry' I can't agree with that," Lowe said. "This is young man who got up at six in the morning, did his individual workout, went to class, and then came to practice at 3:30. How many other players are doing that?"
N.C. State opens with the annual Red/White game on October 25 at Reynolds Coliseum." |

Three key questions
N.C. State has back three starters from a basketball team that went 15-16 in 2007-08 and finished with a nine-game losing streak. Here are some things the Wolfpack must learn in the preseason as the team prepares for its Nov. 15 opener at New Orleans:
1. Will Brandon Costner return to elite status? During N.C. State's run to the 2007 ACC Tournament final, Costner looked poised to become one of the conference's best players. But he slumped badly as a sophomore last season, averaging 8.5 points after an offseason when he never was completely healthy.
Now that one-year freshman standout J.J. Hickson has moved on to the NBA, Costner appears ready to regain his leadership position. Losing 11 pounds during the offseason could help him begin creating matchup problems for other power forwards on the perimeter again.
2. Can the point guard problem be solved? Even before Farnold Degand tore a knee ligament last season, N.C. State was inadequate at point guard. Degand returns after a year of rehabilitation and joins sophomore Javi Gonzalez and freshman Julius Mays in the backcourt.
Coach Sidney Lowe said the team will need contributions from all three.
But even if Degand is completely healthy, Gonzalez is improved and Mays is mature beyond his years, the position Lowe once played for the Wolfpack could be his biggest frustration.
3. How will Courtney Fells' move work out? Fells, the team's top returning scorer (10.6 ppg) is moving from shooting guard to small forward as a senior. He looks solid after putting on seven pounds of muscle and has the athletic ability to succeed at his new position.
The question is who will fill Fells' shoes in the backcourt with the point guard spot already shaky. Gritty Trevor Ferguson, who is overmatched athletically but was the team's most improved player last season, should get first shot at it. 10/15/2008 8:51:25 AM |

Ferg starting at the 2?
I know he was improved and can shoot, but that isn't the makings of a good backcourt...
Hopefully the three SRs go back to 2 years ago...
Farnold and Ferg vs. Lawson and Ellington. We'll take 'em!!!
